***2001***

"Happy Birthday, Lennon" everyone shouted.

My parents back lawn was packed to the gills with people here to celebrate my 18th birthday. Aunt, uncles, cousins, friends. But my eyes only searched for one guy. My heart dropped when I realized he wasn't there.

"Thanks everyone." I said, blowing out the candles on the extravagant 3 tiered cake my parents had gotten me. Vegan, by my mother's request.

Cake was served, music was played, dancing was done. Still no Tommy. He was a couple of years older than me. I could only imagine he didn't want to spend his time at some "child's" birthday party, though by legality, I was an adult.

"Why the long face, pumpkin?" My mother asked, pulling me inside the house. She didn't have to ask. She knew.

I hung my head and feel my mom's arms wrap around me.

"He'll be here." She whispers to me.

A lone tear runs down my cheek and I wipe at it quickly.

"What if he doesn't show?" I ask, holding back a sniffle and a dam that is threatening to explode.

"Did you invite him?" She asks in her motherly tone that she only uses on special occasions such as this.

"Yes."

"Then he'll be here."

"I love him, mom." I admit for the first time out loud.

She laughs and puts her arms around me. "Oh, honey. I know you do. You look just the way I did when I met your father. You've looked that was since you were 6 years old. Tommy too. He is in love with you too."

"And if he isn't?" I ask.

Mom looks around to make sure no one has joined us then she looks me pointedly in the eyes. "Then fuck him. If he can't have the decency to show for you, then forget him. If he doesn't see the wonderful person you are, then he can go fuck himself. You are far too beautiful, smart and kind to wait around on some...boy." She says the last word with disgust.

I laugh at my mother's choice in language. She is a free spirit but she rarely ever curses.

"There's that smile." She says, wiping the tear from my face. "I don't think you have to worry about it, darling." She utters and points through the glass doors that lead to our lawn.

Tommy is standing there, staring into the house. He has a big goofy grin on his face and something hidden behind his back. My heart leaps for joy but I'm frozen in place.

"Go on." Mom nudges, pushing me through the door.

"Happy birthday, Lennon." He smiles down at me.

"Thank you."

He produces a bouquet of flowers and hands them to me. They are the most stunning flowers I've ever seen.

"Beautiful flowers for a beautiful girl."

"I love you!" I scream in my head but the words are caught in my throat.

He touches my cheek and smiles at me. Butterflies are doing the conga in my stomach.

"I'm off for a theater program in the morning." He mutters under his breath.

"Oh? Where?"

"It's a traveling show. Shakespeare. I'll be gone for 6 months."
