Emily walked out of the school and went to the parking plot where her father, Andy, sat in his gray peugeot, waiting for her. He was calling someone but quickly hung up when he saw Emily. She sat down in the passenger seat with a huff.
"Hey dad." She said
"Hey Em, how was school?"
"Fine, can we go?"
"Why? Did something happen?"
"Can we just go, please?"
"Okay." Andy said and started to drive. Emily leaned her head against the window and looked around, she saw Chester sitting on the front of his car, making out with the head cheerleader and Emily quickly looked away. Chester was a good friend of her and has been her crush for a while now, so it hurt a bit to see him kiss someone else.
"Why did we have to move here?" She asked her father.
"I told you a thousand times, the company reassigned me to Dublin because I am more useful here, there were too many people in Auckland."
"They could have moved you to an other city, they didn't have to move you to the other side of the world!"
"I didn't want to go to an other city in New Zealand."
"Why not?"
"Because now we can see something of the world... i just didn't want it okay, now i don't want to hear another word about it." Andy said stern. "Did something happen today?"
"No, just people laughing during class because i talk with an accent."
"They are just jealous you come from a place where we have a thing in the sky called 'the sun'." Andy said and smiled a little at his own joke.
"There are not jealous, they think I'm crazy because i left the place."
"They don't know it, Auckland isn't that amazing."
"It's better than this."
"You just need to get used to it."
"We've already been here for six months, shouldn't I be already?"
"I would be surprised if you were, this is the other side of the world, not just an other town."
Emily sighed and leaned her head back against the window again. Andy put a hand on her leg.
"It's going to be okay." He said and took a turn to the street they lived in.
"Can i take driving lessons soon?" Emily asked
"Why? I can just pick you up, right?"
"It is really awkward when you do."
"Well, I don't want you to drive yet, so no. not that you could drive anyways, I need the car every day."
Emily groaned softly and got out of the car and walked into the house. She dropped her bag in the hallway and sat on the couch in the living room. Andy walked into the kitchen and started to make dinner ready. Emily watched some tv and texted a little with friends until Andy called her for dinner. When they were eating Andy cleared his throat.
"Emily?" He said.
"Yes?"
"Can we have a serious conversation?"
"Depends, about what?"
"About your mother."
"I don't want to talk about her."
"Why not? She is your mother."
"Not to me, she just left us, over thirteen years ago she just left without a word or even a note! To me she is not my mother, just the woman that put me on this earth, I hate her." Emily sad mad.
"I don't want to hear that about your mother, young lady!" Andy said stern. "She is still your mother. But I don't mean your mother as in Amanda, your biological mother, but... ehm.."
"Please don't tell me you are seeing some chick you want me to accept as a mother."
"No, I'm not seeing other women, I promised you I would never date an other woman."
"Then what are you trying to say?" Emily asked. Andy thought for a little while and sighed.
"Never mind, it's not important right now."
"Ehm.... Okay?" Emily said a bit confused. they finished dinner and Andy left for a while so Emily went to her room for a while. She was watching some YouTube video's when Chester texted her.
'Hey Emmy, how are ya?' He texted
'I'm fine, how about you?' Emily texted back.
'I'm good, though Amber just pretended to like me, so I broke up with her. How about you, did anything happen with you?'
'My dad is acting a bit weird. And i'm sorry to hear that about Amber.' Emily texted though she was secretly a little happy he was single again.
'I thought you said he IS weird :p'
'He is, but he is acting even weirder.'
'Should i come over?'
'That'd be amazing!'
'Okay, I'll be there in 10 min.'
'See ya!'
Emily got up and checked is she looked presentable, quickly combed her hair and went downstairs. When the doorbel rang Emily opened and smiled at Chester. "Hey Chess."
"Hey Em." Chester said and they went in and sat on the couch. Emily got drinks for the both of them and sat down next to him.
"So what was it with your old man?" Chester asked with a little smile.
"He started about my mother. He said he wanted to have a serious talk but then suddenly said it was not important and now he suddenly left 'for business'."
"Weird, do you believe him?"
"No, i think he is hiding something from me.... I think he is seeing other women even though he says he doesn't."
"How about we go out and forget about it? I need to forget some stuff as well."
"Sure, where shall we go?"
"I know a nice club we can drink a bit a dance."
"Okay, but you can't have alcohol because you still have to drive."
"Awh, you're no fun, one beer won't kill us, right?"
"We'll see when we get there."
Chester smiled and grabbed her hand to pull her up, they got into Chester's car and went to a club nearby. they danced and drank some and Emily had to hold the urge to kiss Chester, even more so when a slow song came up and Chester pulled her against him and they danced together.Meanwhile Andy came home and was a bit confused the lights were all off and the door was locked. He unlocked it and went in. "Emily?" He called but no answer came. He went into the living room and sat two half full glassed on the counter. he noticed a weird smell and sniffed a few times. He smelled Emily's perfume but also a manly cologne, but it wasn't his own. A bit suspicious he walked up the stairs and slowly opened Emily's bedroom, a bit scared of what he would see, but it was empty. Andy grabbed his phone and called her but only got her voicemail. He tried three more times but she didn't pick up. Andy roamed a hand though his dirty blond hair (that was getting a little gray already) and walked back down the stairs while looking up a number in his phone, when he found it he called it.
"Hey Andy, how are you?" A male voice asked on the other side.
"I'm not okay, help me, Devon."
"What's wrong?"
"Emily is gone and i don't know where she is."
"What? Why did she leave?"
"I don't know but I will find out. Have you got any idea where a teenage girl would go with a boy?"
"She's with a boy? O boy.."
"Why?"
"Well, I don't know the guy she is with but knowing kids nowadays.... he might try to do something with Emily."
"Indeed, that's why I need to find them."
"I'd love to help, but i really have no idea where she could be. Maybe a club but I don't know, sorry."
"I understand.... thanks nevertheless."
"Good luck."
"thanks, I'll need it." Andy said and hung up, he sighed and tapped the phone against his slightly bearded chin. He looked out of the window to check if Emily was coming that moment but she wasn't. Andy looked back at his phone and picked an other number.
"Hey Andy." A man on the other side said when he picked up and Andy slightly smiled when hearing the voice.
"Mikeal, I need your help." Andy said.
"What can I help you with at..... 11:48 p.m.?"
"Yeah, sorry it's at this hour but my daughter Emily is gone and i have no idea where she is. you know this city better than I do, can you help me?"
"Ehm... I think I can, I know some places where she could have gone, i've been a teenager too."
"Okay, I'll send you a picture of Emily so you know what she looks like or maybe ask around."
"That's a good idea, I'll start to drive around then." Mikeal said and walked to his car.
"Wait," Andy said when he saw a car drive up to the house. "there's a car coming." The car stopped and Emily stepped out with Chester.
"it's Emily, you don't have to go anymore. Thanks anyways though."
"Anytime, see you tomorrow?" Mikeal asked and Andy smiled.
"Yes, see you tomorrow, I've got to kill two people right now."Mikeal chuckled. "Good luck with that."
"thanks, bye."
"Bye." Mikeal said and hung up. Andy put his phone away and walked to the door. He opened it and leaned against the doorpost with his arms crossed. Chester pulled back from the hug he gave Emily and noticed Andy.
"Oh shit." He said softly.
"What?" Emily asked and turned around. "oh, hi dad."
"And where have you been?" Andy asked stern.
"Mr Danton, It was my fault, i persuaded her into coming with me, I thought it wou-"
"I think it's better if you keep your pretty mouth shut." Andy cut him of.
"Dad, we just went to a club and danced a bit to take our minds of things, nothing more."
"Inside, now. As for you, Chester, go home." Andy said and Emily walked inside. Chester went to his car and drove home. Andy closed the front door and went to the living room with Emily.
"Sit." Andy said.
"Why?"
"So I am taller and look more intimidating, now sit down." Andy said a bit angry and Emily sat down. Andy looked down on her, in these kinds of situations he hated it Emily was a bit taller than him, especially when she was wearing heels.
"Where were you?! I was worried sick!" Andy said angry and worried.
"Like i said, I was out to a club with Chester to take out mind of things."
"Why?"
"Because you started about mom, it's a sensitive subject, okay. And since you were gone and I was texting with Chester.... it just happened."
"Did he touch you?"
"What?"
"Did Chester touch you?"
"I heard you, why are you asking that? Of course not, we are just friends."
"You can never be sure with guys."
"No, he didn't touch me, happy?"
"Yes, but don't do this again."
"Dad, i need my freedom and I need to go out too."
"I understand, but next time text me to say you are out, I really had no Idea.
"Okay, I will."
"Good, now go to bed, It's late and you need to go to school tomorrow."
Emily nodded. "Night." She said and walked up the stairs.
"Night." Andy said and soon went to bed himself.
