Emily sat on the couch when the doorbell rang. She walked ti the door and opened it but didn't see anyone. She was about to close it again but then saw a box on the doormat. She grabbed it and carried it inside. On the box was a note

To the most beautiful girl in school.
This doesn't even compare to you, but I hope you'll like it and wear it to prom.

Love

There was no name at the bottom, but a knight from a chessboard. Emily smiled and opened the box. She then pulled out a beautiful cyan colored dress with a small sweetheart neckline, a little beading around the waist and a long, flowy skirt. Emily looked at it twice before taking it upstairs and trying it on. It fitted like a glove and she absolutely loved it. She then noticed the split in the dress on the middle if her left thigh and she chuckled. She walked back downstairs and took the box with her back up the stairs, then noticing there was a smaller box inside it. She took it out and opened it, inside were earrings with a matching necklace, all with small blue stones that sparkled in the light. She tried them on and looked in the mirror and smiled. She then changed back to her normal clothes and hung the dress in her closet and put the jewelry back in the box and placed it with her other jewelry. Then Andy came home and made dinner after putting his stuff away. He called Emily when dinner was ready and they ate together.
"Em." Andy said after a while.
"Yes?"
"I know you don't want to go, but I think you should go to your prom next week. I know you said to me you didn't want to but I think you'll regret it if you don't go."
"I guess I will, and I will go."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"That was easy." Andy said and Emily smiled. "Let me guess... we need to go shop for a dress?"
"No, I'll be fine." Emily said and Andy looked a little confused.
"What?"
"I'll be fine, don't worry about those things."
"Sure?"
"Yes."
"Okay..." Andy said, still confused. they finished dinner and did the dishes.

A week later it was prom night. Emily had bought her ticket during a break but still told Chester she wouldn't go, he was a little disappointed but responded understanding. That night Emily changed and did her hair, put the jewelry on and added a little bit of make up to her face. when she walked down the stairs Andy smiled at her.
"I know fathers say it all the time and it doesn't have that much effect, but you are beautiful." He said with a smile.
"Thanks." Emily said and smiled back. They sat in the car and Andy brought her to school.
"If you want me to pick you up text me or call me, also if someone else brings you home. Okay?"
"Okay. see you later." Emily said and got out of the car. She walked to the entrance and showed het ticket before walking in. Some people were already looking at her because she looked a lot different from how she usually looks. She walked through the hallway and hung her coat somewhere and put her phone and keys in her locker, she then walked further. Loud music could be heard from the canteen an Emily walked to it. Most of the students were dancing or drinking something and trying to talk to friends, though that was hard.
"Emily?" She heard behind her, she turned and saw Liam.
"Oh, Hey mr. Sandson." Emily said and smiled a little.
"I thought you would not come." Liam smiled.
"I didn't want to come at first, but someone gave me a reason to go."
"Ahh, may I ask who?"
"I think you already know."
"Chester?"
"Yeah... have you seen him?"
"The last time I saw him he went to the toilet, he seemed a little nervous."
"Okay. Thanks." Emily said and walked to the hallway with the toilets, it was nice and quiet there. Chester just walked the other way and turned the corner. Emily walked a little faster and tried to catch up with him. When she did she tapped his shoulder. Chester turned around, still a little nervous but smiled when seeing Emily.
"So you did come?" He said smiling.
"Yes, I could not stay home and leave your dress in my closet."
"H-how do you know it was from me?"
"Seriously? you send a chess piece with it, it was obvious."
"True... though I hoped you wouldn't figure that one out."
"But I did. Thank's for everything, though you didn't have to."
"I did. I messed up and I wanted to make it up. I know it isn't going to cut it but... this way I could use the money for something I think was good."
"I already forgave you, remember?"
"Right... but still."
"And i can't get you out of my head."
"Is that so?"
"Yes. It is." Emily said and Chester smiled. he leaned down and kissed her. Emily smiled and wrapped her arms around him. Chester pulled back after a while.
"So... you take me back?"
"Yes, but I already wanted that, even before you send me this... I just needed a little more time and stuff..."
"I understand. I'm happy you give me a second chance."
"No problem." Emily said and hugged him. Chester hugged back.
"Do you want a drink?" He asked.
"Yes, I'd like that." Emily said and they got drinks. they drank it and danced a bit. After a while One from U2 came up and Chester pulled Emily closer against him. Emily wrapped her arms around him and softly sang along.
"You know this song?" Chester asked.
"I love this song."
"How do you know it?"
"Just because I'm not Irish that doesn't mean I don't like Irish bands."
"True." Chester said and they both sang along with the song. After a while Chester kissed her again and Emily kissed back. they shared some kisses during the dance. When the song was over they went to the side and Chester got them some drinks again. They sat down somewhere and drank some, Emily was leaning against him and he had wrapped his arm around her. Some louder music was played so they went to a more quiet hallway near the entrance of the school.
"So how are things at home now?" Emily asked.
"Better. My mother is in rehab and is less aggressive. We paid all of our debts and we my father is home more, we are more of a family again."
"That's amazing." Emily said.
"I'm happy about it too." Chester said and they walked back to the canteen. they danced a little more and talked to others as well. After a couple of hours they started to get tired and people started to leave. Emily and Chester grabbed their stuff too and walked out.
"Do you want me to bring you home?" Chester asked.
"I'd like that." Emily said and they walked to his car. When they were close to it Chester saw someone was waiting for him by the car. He grabbed Emily's hand and walked away, pretending he parked his car somewhere else. The man who was waiting for him followed them and Chester noticed and got nervous.
"Chess, are you okay?" Emily asked when she noticed he looked back a couple of times.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He said though looked back again. "Em, go inside, I'll get the car and pick you up at the entrance." He said when he saw the man was a lot closer.
"Oi! Asshley!" The man yelled. Emily turned around and Chester turned as well.
"Em, go." Chester said again, though she stayed with him
"Where is it?" The man asked.
"Where's what?" Chester asked
"My money."
"I don't have money."
"You really want to do this, kid? You don't have to act tough for your lady, we both know you aren't."
"Chess, what's going on?" Emily asked.
"He owes me money." The man said
"I thought you paid all your debts." Emily whispered to Chester.
"This is different." Chester said. "I don't have your money.. I... I'll give it to you next week."
"No, I already gave you way too much time to pay me, your time is up."
"Please, give me more time."
"No, you should've thought before you bought things for your girl instead of paying me."
"I did... please.."
"NO!" The man yelled and pulled out a gun. Chester put Emily behind himself to protect her.
"How much does he owe you? we can give you the jewelry." Emily said, wanting to take of her necklace, the man snorted.
"That not even close to what he owes."
"Please, don't." Chester said a little scared.
"You have had more than enough time to pay, you leave me no other choice." The man said and pulled the trigger.
"NO!" Emily yelled when she heard the shot and felt Chester collaps. She caught him and lay him down slowly. Chester coughed up some blood.
"Chester, oh gosh.... no no no no" Emily said. Chester breathed short hasty breaths. Emily pressed her hand on the wound in his stomach and put some pressure on it.
"SOMEBODY HELP!" She yelled and saw someone run their way, it was Liam.
"What happened?" He asked
"Call an ambulance, quickly." Emily just said before looking back down at Chester.
"E..... Em.."
"Don't speak, save your strength. Please stay awake, Chess." Emily said and quickly pulled of her coat and wrapped it around him, trying to keep him a little warm.
"T..thanks for tonight." Chester said and reached his hand to her cheek.
"An ambulance is coming." Liam said. Emily heard it but didn't pay attention.
"Stay awake Chess, help is on its way." She said but noticed his eyes rolled slightly, though he tried to keep them open.
"Don't you dare to close those eyes. stay awake, Chess. Stay with me, stay awake, please." Emily said. Chester put his hand on her cheek.
"Emily..... I...." He said before he closed his eyes and stopped breathing.
