Chapter 18: The Great Date
Reese's POV
"Ok what's wrong?" Krystal asked when I picked her up from her Sunday yoga class.
"Nothing." I kept my lips pressed together in a thin line.
"Ok well where's your mothers car?" She folded her arms and I shrugged.
"Not using it at the moment."
"Damnit Reese did you leave home again?"
No answer.
"Are you staying at Marcus's?"
"I went over to his place last night. There was a wild party going on so I just crashed in a spare room and borrowed his car for the day."
"You didn't see him?"
"Nope. I tried looking for him but when I asked around they said he was with some blonde girl. I figured I shouldn't disturb him."
"Well something must have happened if your staying at Marcus's place." She continued to probe.
"I just need to be away."
"Why?" She pressed.
"Drop it Krystal." I gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles started to turn white.
"No. Tell me." She demanded. "Talk to me Reese. You've confided in me before remember?"
"What do you want me to say?" I finally snapped. "That I started having my nightmares again? I'm forced to go to my stupid therapist again? My mothers oblivious, my fathers off working half the time, and Samantha came back with Valentino Jr. in tow." His name tastes like dirt in my mouth.
That dumb bitch.
"Samantha?" Krystal looked shocked.
"Oh yeah she just pops up after years of no contact. After dropping that bomb at my brothers funeral she vanishes and just reappears expecting everything to be fine again."
"That's your baby nephew though." Krystal whispers.
"No none of them are my family." I spat fiercely and she flinched back. "If she wanted a family she shouldn't have fucking left."
My hands were trembling and I opened the car door stepping outside. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a lighter along with a cigarette. It took a while to light it as my fingers shook when I went to flick the match.
"Reese you shouldn't be smoking. I thought you quit." Krystal admonished.
"Get back in the car. The smoke isn't good for the baby. I just need a minute."
Of course she doesn't listen and places a gentle hand across my own. I take a harsh breath and glance at her. Her eyes are sad, but I know her well enough to know it isn't because of what I said. Something else is bothering her.
