Chapter 37: Labor

Krystal's POV

I wake up with a start and feel something wet beneath me. I flick on my light switch and push my blanket aside.

My eyes bug out.

"MOM!" I scream. "MOTHER!"

She comes bursting in, her face smeared with a guacamole face mask and her hair set in rollers.

"What is it?" She looks panicked.

"I think my water just broke."

Right after I finish saying that I feel a pain in my stomach and cry out.

"Ok sweetie it's ok," she hurries over to help me out of bed. Another pain explodes through my stomach and I grit my teeth.

"GABBY! GABBY!" Mom hollers for our live in maid. "GABBY GET IN HERE NOW!"

"Yes miss?" Gabby is standing by the doorway in her nightgown.

"Pull the car around."

"Of course miss," she scurries away and with the guidance of my mother we make our way down the stairs.

"Hang in there honey, it'll be ok."

I nod unable to speak because if I do a flurry of curse words and obscenities would come out of my mouth. As soon as we're in the car Gabby floors it and I turn to my mom.

"Did you call Reese's parents?"

"Yes they're on their way."

I close my eyes and try to endure the next wave of pain. I feel like screaming and ripping someone's head off.

When we reach the hospital Gabby helps me out of the car and leads me inside while my mom runs in ahead of us.

"My daughters in labor!"

The receptionist immediately calls for a nurse and I'm put on a stretcher and wheeled to the maternity unit. It hurts so fucking much and this time when the pain comes again I scream.

The doctors and nurses work together, taking my blood pressure, monitoring the baby, documenting the time between my contractions, hooking me up to an IV since the pain is too much and I decide I want an epidural. They tell me I won't have the baby right away and it may even be hours before I even push the baby out. Afterwards they leave and I try to relax.

Shortly after Reese's mom comes in. She places her hand on her forehead and asks if I'm okay.

"I'm fine," I reassure her. "A little uncomfortable but fine."

"That's good," she chuckles. "Reese is outside sweating bullets. He's terrified."

I laugh. "I know the feeling."

"I told him, 'at least you're not the one pushing a human being out of your body.'"

We chat for a bit and she just advices me to breath and relax. Then after she leaves Reese's sister in law Samantha comes in.

"Are you excited?"

"I'm partly excited, mostly nervous."

She pats my arm. "Don't be. I'm sure you'll be a great mother."

"Thanks."

"Well I'm sure you have other people who want to see you so I'll just be on my way," she walks out and for a few minutes it's just me and silence. Another contraction comes but it's less painful thanks to the epidural.
