Resurfaced

A giggle was heard throughout the forest as a young girl wiggled her toes in the damp grass beneath them. The feel of the morning dew kissing her feet sent a rush of butterflies to her small stomach.

It had been raining nonstop for what seemed like forever in her opinion. She never quite liked the rain. She preferred the sunshine and the sounds that the forest made. Sounds of birds chirping and water flowing sweetly. The rain would mask the beauty of it all, and she hated that.

"Amaya, are you trying to scare the fish away?" Her older brother hissed in annoyance.

Amaya's green eyes settled on the boy before her. She watched in amusement as he stood in the river, waist deep, with a long spear in his hand. His eyebrows were furrowed as he glared into the clear waters, searching for their breakfast.

"You're doing great, Satoshi!" The young girl yelled, hiding her mischievous smirk behind her hand as she saw him send a glare her way.

Satoshi grumbled angrily to himself as he stomped the best he could further down the river. Amaya giggled in response. She always loved annoying her brother; it was her job.

Sending another quick glance in her brother's direction, she sneaked closer to the river. She was never allowed to go near it because of her "near-death" experience as a child.

Apparently she'd gotten to close to the river and had fallen in. She didn't necessarily drown, however she could have and that was enough to  drive her brother paranoid.

She rolled her eyes at the thought. That incident was years ago. She was nearly twelve years old and practically old enough to take care of herself.

The prettier flowers were near the bank anyway. As she began to pick them, she noticed something shiny within the overgrown grass. Curious, she dropped the flowers she'd been picking and cautiously moved towards it.

Every time that it would rain heavily, the river would overflow and sometimes there would be interesting treasures washed up on the bank.

Amaya gave another quick glance over her shoulder. When she saw her brother stabbing aimlessly at the water, she had to swallow her giggles. Turning back around, she moved the grass out of the way only to discover ...a scabbard?

She carefully picked it up and examined it. With a confused look, she searched for a matching blade, but it was nowhere to be found.

She blinked. "Where's the sword?"

"Amaya, what are you doing?!--"

Amaya jumped as she heard water splashing towards her. She turned to her brother with a large grin on her face. "Look what I found!"

She held the scabbard close to his face so he could get "a better look." Satoshi grimaced as he examined the bronze detailing. He had to admit, it was pretty nice. It looked well taken care of, too.

Wait a minute.

Shaking his head, Satoshi snatched what he assumed to be some kind of artifact out of her hands. "Why don't you ever listen? You could have gotten hurt," he scolded.

Amaya let out an exaggerated groan, mocking him with her hand. As he continued to scold her, her green eyes traveled away from him and settled on the water.

Her eyes squinted as a thought crossed her mind. Why does Satoshi insist on fishing? He's wayyy better at hunting. Well, he's okay at it anyway.

As her thoughts traveled, she noticed something floating in the water. Something a lot bigger than the scabbard.

"Are you even listening to me?"
