Nervousness flowed through her bloodstream as she contemplated. Should she do it? Or should she not?
She was sitting at the corner of her regular coffee shop, drinking her usual order of a milky cappuccino.
She was so focused on her laptop before, but now her concentration melted away when he had arrived - her boyfriend, Mark - not alone, but with another girl. This other girl, however, was dressed in a similar attire as her boyfriend – pencil skirt, black heels with black stockings, a white buttoned blouse and a long beige coat shielding her from the angry coldness outside.
They were seated just a few tables from her. Mark made no acknowledgement of Nora, as he had totally missed her and walked right past.
Her gaze became fixated at her boyfriend while her mind dwelled on some trivial matter – should she go and say 'hi' or just let them be?
Nora didn't know what their relationship was but by the looks of the other woman's attire, she could say that they were business co-workers or some sort. However, the way she touched her boyfriend's forearm could say differently.
Twenty minutes passed and Nora still sat there, contemplating. Her half finished coffee had gone cold and she had barely done any work other than what she did before, ever since he arrived.
Nora was a web designer and worked fluctuating hours, unlike her boyfriend, who was a human resource manager and worked a fixated schedule.
Oh god, I need to stop thinking about that and just do this. I'll say hi in a few minutes, she thought. But it was too late. Her boyfriend and his...co-worker stood up from their seats and left a ten-dollar bill on the table.
It was too late - she had missed her chance. She breathed out a frustrated sighed and ran a stressed hand through her hair.
It was the first time in two weeks that she had seen him, in person, as the only form of communication between him and her were just tasteless text messages.
She closed her eyes and held her head in her hands, as a disappointed emotion bubbled inside. Why didn't I just go up and say 'Hi'? They were just drinking coffee, she thought.
Too concentrated in her thoughts, she didn't notice a young man standing next to her.
"Are you alright Miss?" A bashful voice spoke. This broke Nora from her thoughts, making her look up from the brown wooden table.
It was a waiter from the café, named Alex, as the badge pinned on his grey uniform stated. He was a newbie who had just started a month ago and they had yet to exchange words to each other – until now.
"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you." Her response was quick and sharp – barely any change in tone, just a baseless voice. However, once she said it, she realised how harsh it sounded and hastily apologised, "Oh, I'm sorry. I'm not angry at you. I just...had a bad day." She hesitated. It wasn't a lie – it was the truth, but she felt weird saying it.
He let a small chuckle, showcasing his deep voice, "It's alright. I have those days too." He gave her a polite smile with his hazel coloured eyes glimmering from the light. She replicated the smile.
"Alex, table four needs you." Another worker of the café called out, making his cheeks tint with a pink tone.
"Well I-I need to go now. I hope you...have a good day today." He said with a nervous voice, making Nora laugh softly - his actions were cute.
"You too...Alex." She smiled and watched his cheeks go a deeper pink as he whisked around, making his hair flow with the motion and scurried to table four, which had a young girl and boy sitting down.
The girl had her light brown hair in cute little pigtails while the boy had black-rimmed glassed on. He looked older than the girl, most likely to be in his young teens. The girl was maybe as young as five or so.
Whipping her attention from table four to her laptop screen, she thought, Alright, time to finish this, and situated her fingertips on her smooth keyboard, and began typing away.
