It was Friday – the day of the dinner. Two weeks have passed and Nora was still having mixed feelings about Alex. She had been avoiding Alex's presence ever since her sister visited – only going to the café when he was on break. However, he had tried to call and text her a few times, but all she did was just open them and never gave a reply.
She still felt kind of betrayed by him.
Why didn't he tell me that he made the cakes for the café? She thought. That unanswered question had been lingering in her mind for sometime now, making her mind twitch with curiosity.
But as today was the dinner, there was no chance she could avoid him, as she'll feel bad if she cancelled it, so tonight will be when she confronts him about his little secret.
She only had two hours to prepare the meal and get dressed before he arrives – the dinner began at 6:30pm.
Nora had decided to make her speciality – her pumpkin soup. She wanted to make something as delicious as Alex's meal last time, but she was only good at making pumpkin soup.
The warm vapour tickled her nose, as she lifted the lid off her saucepan. The soup was simmering away – it was almost ready. Her slices of French baguette were in the oven, toasting a light brown.
She now had twenty minutes to get dressed.
Taking off her apron and putting it on the kitchen bench, she strode to her room. She had already prepared an outfit to wear earlier that lied on her bed. Slipping on the slim fitted knee length dress, she zipped it up from the back. Her earrings were worn next, along with a tint of pink lipstick on her plump lips. She gave her hair a little ruffle and comb with her slender fingers – she wanted to have a mini tousle effect.
With five minutes to spare, she took the toasted baguette from the oven and turned the heat off for her hot pumpkin soup. The dinner was ready. She took the already prepared salad from the fridge and placed it on the bench top, just a second before her doorbell rang – Alex was here.
Nervousness started kicking in – she hadn't seen him in the two weeks and this will be the first time. She paced to the door and hesitated for just a moment, before twisting the doorknob open. Her stomach twirled and swirled with anticipation, excitement and shyness.
The wind from the movement of the door intensified Nora's perfume. She was met with a nicely dressed Alex. His hands clutched the bottom of a small bouquet of flowers, "H-hi." He stammered; he was nervous too, which gave a little relief to Nora – she wasn't the only one feeling like that. Nora smiled.
"Come in Alex," She said lively. Alex held out his flowers.
"Um, I-I got these for you. I didn't know what to get, so I g-got them instead." He blushed. Seeing him blush was so adorable and lit up Nora's heart. Butterflies churned in her stomach and her heartbeat raced.
"Thank you, Alex." She beckoned him to come in, "I'll go put these in some water. Please have a seat in the lounge room. It's just straight ahead." She strolled to the kitchen and got a vase from the cupboard. She filled it with water and placed her colourful flowers in – they smelt really sweet...just Alex.
"Would you like to start dinner now?"
Alex nodded his head, "Yes, please." He was starving and his stomach was going to demonstrate a whaling call. She guided Alex to her dining table and seated him, before whisking to the kitchen. I hope he likes this, she thought as she served the food on the plate.
The dinner conversation was just like the first one, however, the atmosphere was slightly different – there was more tension in the air. They both wanted to speak out their thoughts, but supressed them instead – making it bottle up inside.
I want to ask why he didn't tell me about the cakes, she thought.
I want to ask why she has been ignoring me for the past two weeks, he thought.
When the dinner had done its course, Nora went to wash the dishes. "Let me help," Alex spoke. His voice was as soft as usual. She smiled politely, shaking her head to decline.
"No, it's fine."
"Please, I want to." He pleaded. His hazel eyes glimmered, which made it even harder for Nora to say 'no'. She breathed out a sigh and gave in. He dried the dishes while she washed them.
Her thoughts were still bottled within and wanted to let them out. She didn't know if now was a good time to say it, but it was better now than never. "So..." Nora started, "Why didn't you tell me you made the cakes for the café? I even gave you your own cakes during last dinner. How embarrassing was that?" a light blush made its way on her cheeks, "Why didn't you say anything?" The tone was almost as harsh as to make Alex flinch, but he didn't. Her bottled emotions were finally released.
Alex was quiet, he pondered over what she said. The silence was heavy, even though it only lasted two or three seconds top. He didn't know how to reply, but gave it go, "I-I'm sorry." He apologised, "I...I don't know. I don't know why I didn't tell you, but I swear, I wasn't trying to hide it." A sincere expression was plastered on his face – he wasn't lying. Was that why she ignored me for the past two weeks? He thought. Nora's feeling of betrayal was faltering now that she knew the truth.
"Is that why you ignored me for the past two weeks?" He asked. Nora's cheeks redden and she nodded her head.
Oh my god, he's going to think I'm so childish, she thought. "You must think I'm so childish to do that." Nora pouted. Alex thought it was endearing.
"Actually, no. I thought it was kind of...cute that you thought of me so much." He blushed.
He thought I was cute? She thought.
They finished washing the dishes with a comfortable but shy atmosphere. They both wanted to express their feelings for each other.
Alex's phone rang as they were done. He fished it out from his back pocket and answered the call. He finished the call and shoved the device back into his pocket.
He breathed a sigh, "I'm sorry Nora, I have to go. Something's up at my place." A sadden expression was going to show on Nora's face, but she forced it down and replaced it with a small smile.
"It's okay." He gathered his belongings and she guided him to the door.
"Thanks for having me for dinner. I –" He was cut off.
Oh my god, why did I do that? She thought.
