___________________________Jalex's POV
It's been five days.
Five days since I last saw my parents. Where could they be? I don't know. I haven't been eating much lately. I've been spending the last couple days here at my uncle's place with his son, Alec (my cousin), and Alec's friend, Kevin. Kevin's weird though. He gives me the most disturbing looks, like he's eye-raping me or something. Oh, the awkwardness is there alright.
* * *
It was sunny, the perfect day to go out to the beach for most people. Me? I had to attend a funeral. My dad's funeral.
Yeah, and nobody had the guts to tell me this, a week ago, that the reason I hasn't seen my dad was because he was like, dead due to some stupid drunk driver.
Of course, how did I not see that? I'm like fourteen, I would capture these things by now! Stupid head of mine...
That one guy came with us. Kevin. When I began crying hysterically he said everything would be alright or some shit. He even patted my head. Weird. I mean, I'm okay with the hugs, but I'm not okay with knowing he did it out of pity. I hate pity.
I saw my mother, wiping away her tears. I tried walking up to her but she glared at me. It was like she accused me of my father's death. Fine, like I care.
In one swift move, I went towards Alec and Kevin. "Where's my uncle at?" I asked. Alec shrugged.
"Dunno. But hey, do you think the serve tequila here? I'm dying for a scorch. Huh, kinda funny. How I'm dying in a funeral."
I glared at my cousin, and suddenly Alec seemed to get it. "Too soon?" I nodded. Kevin half-smiled, and grabbed my hand. "Think I saw your uncle over by the fountain. He's having a hard time coping with your father's death you know." I sighed.
"Yeah. I am too. They where quite the brotherly pair in the fam, don't you think?" I asked, gently pulling my hand away from Kevin's grasp. He didn't seem to notice or be affected by it though.
"I suppose. I haven't been around as much to know your family that well." Kevin stated. I shrugged, and continued following him.
"Say," I began. "Do you like, know why I keep getting cold stares from everyone? Well, my mother mostly." I knew Kevin hadn't a clue, but I just wanted to get something out. Even something as nonsensical as what I just asked the guy.
"Well, you do know why your dad was out that night right?" I blinked in confusion, earning a sigh from Kevin.
Well excuse me, I had asked a rhetorical question. I didn't actually expect an answer.
"When he... You know." Oh. No, I didn't. "He was out, getting stuff for your quinceañera. He thought it'd be a nice thing to do for you, since I'm guess you're turning fifteen soon and your grandmother always wanted to keep the Mexican genes in the family intact. Your mother blames you for him being out that night, preparing the surprise."
You can say it scared me greatly how much he knew about my family. I think Kevin noticed, because he chuckled. "Your uncle told me."
"Oh. I was beginning to think you where a little too obsessed with me." Kevin's face darkened, but quickly masked it with a slight smirk. "Don't doubt yourself."
