A month later, I found myself sitting on countertop of my new kitchen. The rain beat softly outside, playing like ambience music. There was a knock on the door. I hopped to my feet and bolted, but when I opened it, it was empty.

Ugh, I thought. I missed her. I bent over, already expecting the white envelope on the floor. I opened it and held the letter tightly in my hands.

Bella,

Renessme is now 5'4. She enjoys debating philosophy- mainly Rawls and Aristotle- with Carlisle. She's becoming extremely bright.

I haven't given up on our family. I hope you haven't.

-Alice

Easily, three thousand dollars in twenties, fifties, and hundreds slide into my hand. Alice kept suppyling me an allowance. I felt helpless, but honestly, I was a high school graduate with no talents. What was I supposed to do to support myself?

A picture of Nessie followed after. I shuddered at her- not because she wasn't absolutely gorgeous- but because she 1) had changed so much and 2) she looked so much like her father, who currently wanted to rip my throat out. How long had I been gone? 30 days? How could she look so much older?

I heard footsteps. Jacob stumbled out of our bedroom, wearing nothing but pajama sweats. He ran his fingers through his short, black hair. "Bells," he greeted, with a sleepy-mumble like quality overflowing within his voice.

"Jacob," I said, my voice shaking.

"What is it?"
I shook Nessie's photo in my hand. He stepped back. "Oh," he remarked.

"Oh,"  I repeated, almost mockingly.

"She..."

"She changed."

I took the photo and slid it back into the envelope. "Are we making a mistake?"

"No, Bella, no..."

"You.. my daughter... she's not that far off from an acceptable age, Jacob. She's not."

"It doesn't matter."

"It doesn't matter," I repeated. "You imprinted. It's in your blood, your soul, your being. You want her, don't you? You want her, not me."

"Funny, I could say almost the same thing about you and Edward. You were supposedly destined, weren't you? A pair. He couldn't read your mind because you were his other half... the one he needed to bond with to understand."

I shrugged my shoulders awkwardly. "What are you trying to say?"

"It doesn't matter. Legends and folk tales don't matter." Jacob clasped my hand into his. "LOVE matters, Bella."
