The dawn of the next day appears before Annabeth even realizes, as she tossed and turned the entire night, barely getting any sleep at all. The thoughts of Sam and Clarisse...it just plagued her mind and dreams the entire night of just what they'd walked away from the campsite to do. Countless ideas of things she'd just rather leave alone until she could dismiss them.
"Who the hell does Sam think he is?" She hisses to herself, sitting up in her tent. Rolling her shoulders, she looks to left where Percy sleep last night and pauses. Blinks then rubs her eyes. Her stomach does a flip as she realizes Percy's gone. She breathes. It's fine, it's probably at the campfire. The word campfire brings her back to last night and shaking her head to rid herself of the thoughts, she crawls out of the tent to breathe in some of the fresh forest air.
"Look who decided to crawl outta their hellhole finally." Sam smirks, stretching across on of the logs and eating what looks like a hotdog from the other night.
"Where's Percy?" She glances around and frowns, not looking at him. "And the others?"
"Dunno." Sam pushes himself into a sitting position. "Dean left me a note that said they'd be out for a while hiking. Apparently it was too much trouble to wake me up."
"Guess I slept in too."
Suddenly, Annabeth sees a red mark peeking out from under the collar of Sam's t-shirt. As Sam stretches and lets out a massive yawn she sees more marks, across his collarbones and even venturing down his muscular back. She suddenly realizes what the red marks are. Internally cringing, she begins to imagine how he got those hickies, how Clarisse must have given them to him last night, what it would feel like to latch her teeth onto his skin and....
Get ahold of yourself Annabeth! She thinks quickly, trying to suppress the blush she can feel rising in her cheeks.
"Uh, you okay over there?" Sam asks, squinting through the mid-morning sun.
"Heat rash!" she blurts, a little too quickly. "I'm going to go find something to, uh, eat."
Her mind is still racing with thoughts that are decidedly not PG when she arrives back at the camp with a fistful of blackberries. She lowers herself onto the ground, grabs a stick, and does what she always does when she's confused or worried. She begins to scratch her favorite buildings into the dirt, building the Parthenon and structures from Olympus. After a while the ground around her is covered in her drawings, and she feels her head grow clearer with every column and marble staircase.
"Neat work." A warm hand settles on her shoulder. She whips her head around and discovers Sam, gazing at her drawings in the dirt with a cocked head and a soft smile. "You've got a real talent."
"I've had a lot of practice." She replies sharply, brushing away his hand.
His hand returns to her shoulder. She doesn't push it off this time. Tentatively, she drapes her fingers over his larger hand and squeezes. Sam bends down to her ear.
"I'm sorry." He says, with a gentleness she didn't believe could come from such a powerful man. She turns to him, and their eyes lock. She's never noticed before but his eyes are kaleidoscope of colors, greens and browns and yellows mixing to create a depth unlike anything she's ever seen. After what seems like an eternity, she leans in. Their lips meet, and Annabeth feels like she's coming home. Her body fits seamlessly into his, and his strong hands tangle in her hair with a ferocity that Percy's never had. The kiss deepens, and she feels it deep in her gut, their bodies moving together in perfect harmony. Suddenly, the kiss stops short. Her lips are cold, and the hands that had settled around her hips are gone.
"I.....I can't do this." Sam says, his eyes bright with emotion, and he turns around and stalks off into the woods.
