Jared's POV

I'm getting sick and tired of moving from state to state. If it wasn't for Mason being afraid, we wouldn't have to move anywhere. Unlike him, I'm prepared to fight. Now we both live in this great state of Texas where we know no one.

Being a vampire kind of suck sometimes. I've made a lot of enemies over time and they would probably kill me if they knew where I was.

"Why don't you just go check out the university today. There is no harm in checking it out. You're really getting on my nerves with the pacing and mumblings. We are here in Texas so get over it." Mason said ending the statement in a smirk. Bastard.

"Fine, get off my back Mase." I got up from the chair I was lounging in and picked the keys up from the living room table. "I'm going to check the school out. Don't miss me too much." I said, already in a bad mood.

The school wasn't very far from where lived so it didn't take me too long to arrive. All the smiling people walking around put a damper on my already bad mood. I've been to five colleges in my life, some good experiences and some very bad experiences. Pondering over those bad experiences, someone bumps into me out of nowhere.

It was a girl, about 19 or 20, looking really nervous. What was her deal? She looked up and the first thing I noticed were her beautiful pale green eyes. They seem to glow if you stare long enough and that's what I was doing. Way out of character but something in me wanted to get to know her. I noticed that she was staring.

"Can you stop staring, it's rude." I said with a glare. I just noticed her scent, a werewolf. I've had horrible trouble with werewolves lately.

"S-sorry, excuse me." She said, stuttering. She walked around me without sparing me a glance. Now I feel like a dick. I stared at her as she walked away. She's nothing like those horrible creatures that I have fought with in the past. I guess I'm going to follow her.

I followed her scent which led me to an eating area. As I was sitting in one of the booths a little ways from her, she picked her food up and went to a table in the corner. I was staring at her, studying her features. On the other side of the room I could still see the natural glow of her skin. Her skin closely matched a light mocha color. She must have felt me looking because she turned around to face me. Caught.

When she looked away, I decided to go over to her. There was some kind of pull between us which I hope I'm not the only one feeling it. As I got to the table, I was standing right beside her, waiting for her to look up. She finally noticed me after a couple of seconds. She looked me up and down and tried to discretely wipe around her mouth.

"Can you stop staring, it's rude." She said with an attitude. I laughed because that definitely wasn't the flustered girl I met outside. There was a spark of confidence that went away just as it showed up.

"I'm sorry for staring and I'm also sorry for being blunt earlier. May I take a seat?" I asked politely. She nodded yes and I slid in the seat in front of her. I noticed she was eating three pieces of baked chicken. I guess she is really hungry. It must be the werewolf appetite.

"What's your name?" That's a start.

"Um, it's um, H-Halyn." Halyn. Halyn is a beautiful name, it fits her. She turned away and started staring at the chicken which is weird.

"Well, my name is Jared. It's nice to officially meet you." I said, trying to get her attention again. I held out my hand, hoping I that I wasn't coming on too strong. It seems like she hasn't had much human interaction. I can't scare her away but easier said than done. As I was thinking that, I felt her hand in mine. She pulled away quickly, weird.

"I have to tell you something but it may not be surprising... I'm a werewolf." I never pegged her to be that straightforward.

"I already knew that by your scent. Tell me something though, this connection we have, do you feel it too?" I might as well be straightforward also. This pull felt like an itch on my back that I couldn't reach. It was kind of bugging me.

"Yeah, we're mates. Shifter know their mates by eye contact but I don't know how we are mates. Vampires and Shifters are not known to mate with each other." I never figured the whole mate thing. I didn't learn about that part of the Shifters history. Vampires didn't have the same lifestyles as the shifter population.

"It's unusual for a vampire to have a soulmate at all. We vampires have partners, someone you purposely choose but I'm lucky enough to have a true mate. What does our situation mean anyway?" It's funny how I felt that way after meeting her for less than 15 minutes. This mate stuff is hard core.

"I guess we are special." She said with a shrug. She turned her attention back to her food, nibbling of the end of the chicken. I leaned back and studied her features some more. Her lips are a pale pink and set in a little pout. I like her hair, naturally curly.

"What are you staring at?! Just say something!" Haha, someone is a little irritated. She's kind of bold when she wants to be.

"I was just thinking how we should go on a date tonight to get to know each other better." Turning the charm on.

"That's a little bold don't you think?" Eh.

"I want to know you better Halyn. Give me your number and I will call you later." I said, truthfully. She wrote down her number on a piece of paper and gave it to me. Before I walked away, I grabbed her hand and planted a kiss on it. Man, she was beautiful. She smiled as I walked off.

Deciding to go home, I made my way to the car. As I was driving, I felt the impending need to feed. It was that dreadful time of the week. I could go a couple of days without eating but never longer than that or I would go into bloodlust. Not pretty at all. I don't need to drain a body, I learned to control that part of me. I take what feeds my need and I leave them to regain their strength. I usually have to compel them but nothing extravagant.

I parked in parking spot that was located near an alley. It was the best place to hide and not get interrupted. I turned off the engine and waited for a suitable person to walk by. I usually go for the loners and creepers, I can just tell by their demeanor what they were up to. Just as I was thinking that, a badass came walking out the liquor store with a case of beer. His leather jacket was covered in metal spikes and he wore a grimace on his face. He started walking down the sidewalk. I got out and walked towards my victim.

"Hey mister. Can I ask you something?" I said, stopping in front of him. We were about the same height, he had extra width though. My nostrils flared at the pulsing vein on the left side of his neck.

"Fuck off!" He said angrily, trying to move around me. What have I ever do to him? I got back in front of him and  looked him directly in the eye this time, focusing on him.

"You are going to follow me into this alley over here. You aren't going to give me trouble. You got that?" I stated, gently persuading him. He nodded his head and we headed for the alley.
