My name is Lanie Smalls. My brother Scotty and I recently moved to the Valley. Neither of us were excited to move. He had to leave what few friends he had, and I had to leave softball and volleyball.
We had moved to the neighborhood two weeks before school let out. My stepmother decided that since it was almost over she wouldn't make us go. Thank you Lord. However we now had to try and make friends over the summer.
Scotty and I were unloading boxes to take inside when he started smiling and waving to a boy that looked around my age across the street. The boy was very cute I must admit, and to make him even more attractive I'm pretty sure he had a baseball glove in his back pocket.
The boy had tan skin and dark hair. He looked like he was Hispanic. He was tall and like I already said, very attractive. He looked like a god.
Anyway, The boy nodded his head in Scotty's direction to acknowledge him. He then turned to me and bit his lip. He looked me up and down before looking me in the eyes again before turning around and walking to the house across the street from ours.
I was cool on the outside but on the inside I was freaking out because a totally hot guy was just checking me out. Woah, I need to calm down. I never act like this.
I took my box and went inside blushing. This box had my baseball and volleyball stuff in it. I had two true loves. Baseball and Volleyball, but I love volleyball just a little more than baseball. They are the only things I really care about.
After setting my room how I wanted it I went to the kitchen and saw Scotty making chocolate milk. I snuck up behind him and scared him causing him to almost drop his milk.
"Ah! Lanie you scared me! Don't do that!" He yelled at me. I was too busy laughing to care.
Scotty is my stepbrother. His father died when he was little. My mother died when I was eleven. A year before we moved to Valley my dad married Scotts mom.
I'm Hispanic on my moms side so when people see me with my father they usually think I'm adopted. I really wish my mom was still here. She taught me Spanish before she passed. Spanish is really useful when I'm pissed off at my dad because he doesn't know what I'm saying.
I tend to curse people out in Spanish so I won't get caught. Not many people that I know speak Spanish. My father can only understand certain words or phrases that I say.
Scotty and my father were still getting used to each other.
I walked back to my room and shut my door. My room was next to my dads trophy room. I could hear someone knock on the door. Then I heard someone say "yeah". It sounded like my father which makes sense.
I realized the other person was Scotty after they said, "Um, dad? I-I mean Bill. Remember you-- You promised you'd teach me to play catch?" What? Am I hearing this right? Why wouldn't he just ask me?
I couldn't hear my dad but I heard Scotty still. "Um, w-well, could you teach me?" I finally heard my dad answer after that, "Yeah. Sure." Wow I wonder if he actually will teach him. I love my dad it's just that he never keeps his word.
I'm happy that him and Scotty are getting along though. It's good for Scott to have a father figure, and it's good for dad to have a son to do guy things with. Even though he usually does that stuff with me.-------

----------The next morning I woke up and got ready for the day. I put on a pair of my volleyball shorts and a white t-shirt. Then I laced up my black P.F. Flyers and put my long hair up in a ponytail.
While searching for my volleyball someone went flying past my room. Where could Scotty possibly be going? Woah. Was that his plastic toy baseball glove I saw? Oh dear Lord.
After finally finding my volleyball I went outside to the side of the house and started setting to myself. After getting in fifty sets I bumped it to myself fifty times also. Then I worked on serving. I served from one side of the yard to the other.
I would work on spiking but I need someone to set for me. I'm very serious about volleyball, but I usually only play by myself when I'm nervous or upset. Right now I'm really nervous.
I mean why wouldn't I be? I just moved here and summer will start soon and I have cero friends.
I guess I could go walk around town and try to find someone. There was a sandlot on the way here. I just need to go grab my mitt and I should be good.
"Karen I'm going out!" I yelled to my stepmother while running out the door. I heard her yell something back but I just kept going.-------

----------The sandlot had a bunch of old signs over the fences and the place looked old but it was amazing. There were seven guys out on the field and one batting. The one batting was the boy who I saw yesterday.
I instantly realized that they didn't keep score. It honestly looked like heaven. I could play for them. Then they would have a whole team, but since I'm a girl they probably wouldn't let me.
I was standing by the back fence and something on they other side started growling and making noise. It scared me a lot. I slowly backed away from it when I heard someone yell "Watch out!". I looked up and the ball was going straight for.... Scotty?
He stuck his glove up and covered his face with his other arm. The ball came down and knocked him over. Instantly all the guys started laughing. Very obnoxiously might I add.
I looked over at the cute boy. He was the only one not laughing. Instead he just looked down and shook his head.
Scotty got up and yelled "Okay I'll get it!". One of the boys yelled "get it!" and I wanted to punch him. I was hiding so Scotty wouldn't see me but I could still see him. He kept mumbling to himself while walking towards the ball.
The ball was near the fence and he was slowly walking to it while looking at the fence. The boys started shouting.
"Throw the ball back!"
"Come on!"
"Yeah, hurry up!"
How rude and disrespectful. Finally Scotty grabbed the ball then scrambled back away from the fence.
"We are waiting!" If four eyes doesn't shut up I'm gonna make him.
"Come on!"
"Throw it!"
These boys are so impatient.
"Come on, toss me the ball!"
They kept shouting at him which made me mad. I looked at the hot guy to see him biting his lip and looking down then back up at Scotty.
Finally after what felt like an hour Scotty threw the ball. And boy was it ugly. The baseball only landed a few feet in front of him which caused all the boys to go crazy with their laughing again.
"Oh my god!" One kid yelled while falling down from laughing. The cute boy just shook his head again and he looked like he was disappointed in his friends.
I heard Scotty say, "My life is over." Then he ran. That's it. I've had enough. I walked over and picked up the ball. Freckle faced ginger noticed me and yelled. "Hey princess! Put that down before you hurt yourself!" All the guys laughed. Well almost all.
I smirked at him before I threw it. I threw it hard enough to reach the baseball fence. It actually got stuck in the fence. They all turned to look at me and the hot one was smirking at
me.
I took a bow then they all turned back to look at the ball. While they ran to the ball stuck in the fence, I ran home to my most likely crying stepbrother.
