The first thing I saw when I walked in the house was the living room. It was clean, like: sparkly clean.
Because all of Kit and Alice's stuff were gone and packed.
I sighed heavily as I hung my keys up and walked to the kitchen. I saw Kit and Alice as I sat down.
"Do you want a flight back to Texas, or you want to drive?"
Kit and Alice looked at each other.
"I don't know. I have no money." Kit said.
"I'll take care of the money."
Kit gulped, "Drive."
I sighed, "Alright. This week I'll get you money for the drive back, plus some extra. I'll make some calls too. I can get each of you a body guard who knows about the supernatural. Again, I'll pay. But it's your choice."
"No guard." Kit said. I looked at Alice.
"No guard." She repeated.
I sighed again.
"Just...take care of yourself, OK? I can call when I handle the situation. Unless you don't want me too."
"No, you can call." Kit said. Alice just nodded.
I bit my lip, "I'll give you guys a cover story because people will ask. You wont tell anyone where you were, or where I am. OK?"
"Of corse we wouldn't." Alice said. She was the most mad, so I guess that was good news.
"I'll get the money soon. I...promise." I said, standing up and began to head up the stairs.
"How are you getting the money?" Kit asked.
I bit my lip, knowing she wouldn't like the truth. "It doesn't matter. It cannot lead to either of you."
"Ava-"
"No, Kit. It doesn't matter. Besides..." I took a deep, shaky breath. "Just don't worry. Trust me one last time. You know I would never intentionally hurt any of you, right?"
They looked at each other before they looked at me with accusing eyes.
"Like the time you ran off with Jason for a year without a single word?" Kit said in an offensive tone.
I refrained from rolling my eyes, "You really want to know the truth?"
"Yes, Ava!" She raised her voice. If my step-brothers weren't awake already, they definitely were now. "We want to know the truth. Everything! Why does it feel like we're always in the dark when it comes to you?!"
I huffed and took a step closer.
"I left with Jason because he was dying of terminal cancer."
Her eyes grew big. So did Alice's.
"He had a bucket list, and I didn't want to watch him die with just a cat to look at. I wanted him to see the world. So we did. And you know, I may have left without a word, and I really am sorry. It was a last minute decision." I took a deep breath, trying not to cry or yell, "but I never left either of you or the pack in danger. Remember the bracelet I gave you?"
"Yeah?" Alice questioned.
"I had a caster enchant it. Protection and luck. Besides, you remember meeting Jake?"
"What about?"
"I told him to make sure you all stayed safe. He always informed me what was going on. In a way, I never left."
They looked at me in shame and saddness. I bit my lip.
"I'm no longer your Alpha, and I may not even be a friend. But to me, You'll always be a pack member. I'll always watch over you and protect you. And you were right..." I closed my eyes, tears threatening to escape. I hated looking so vulnerable.
"About what?" Alice asked.
"You two...this isn't you're battle to fight. This is mine, and I just dragged you down with me. So just let me fix this, OK? You deserve a future. You deserve a life with your family, your boyfriend, your friends. I was...a horrible alpha to rip you away from that."
"You were just trying to-"
"I know, Kit." I said, "But please, let me try to do it right this time. I'll have the money at least by Wednesday or Thursday." I bit my lip, looking at their faces of uncertainty.
Then, I turned around and headed up the stairs.
I collapsed on my bed, letting the tears finally fall.I ignored everyone for the rest of the day. Hell, I didn't want to look at them, even though I knew it was childish.
I didn't even want to see my brothers, who also seemed mad at me.
So, I snuck out. I had things to do. I needed money, and I had a long list ahead of me.
I sighed heavily as I crawled out the window and landed on the ground gracefully. The moon's light gently hitting my skin sparked my energy and excitement, but It still made me feel a little lonely knowing Kit or Alice weren't with me.
I needed a Partner in Crime.
