The spark that was once ignited in me had just been extinguished. Like someone had clamped two cold, coarse fingers around the wick and put out the flame. My Skye. They had taken the sheet white of her innocence and drenched it in blood. I turned to go back, taking in air through violently gritted teeth. I turned the corner and there standing in the doorway. Any and all traces of the happiness had perished. Her eyes never came up to meet my own. They were deadly focused on one spot on the laminate floor in front of her.
'Skye?'
Her focus still concrete.
'Skye, why are you up, Skye, what's wrong?'
'You had to know didn't you Adam. You just had to. You couldn't bear the thought of not knowing. There was a choice Adam. And you've made yours. So now you know.'
'Sk-'
'Don't-'
She clenched her eyes tight shut and began slowly walking away from me. She stopped dead just before her bed and her tiny body stared racking. A whimper escaped her lips before she began to sob.
I bolted over to her and wrapped her up tight in my arms. Her knee's weakened and she collapsed into my arms, I lowered us both down to the floor and cradled her. She wept heavily, her face buried into my chest, out of sight.
Her fragile breaths steadied and then halted altogether.
She let out one last shaky breath.
It was finished.
'Why Adam, why' she whimpered, her voice coarse. 'We could've been so happy'
'We can still be happy'
'No Adam, you're so stupid, such a fucking optimist and I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.' She spat, pushing me away from her and scrambling to her feet.
'You're all I've got Skye, I'm sorry. I just needed this to be over. I needed closure I wanted this finished , done, gone forever... Do you ever think about, what are lives would be like if, we were just two ordinary people, with ordinary, maybe a little mundane, upbringings, and then our paths crossed. And we fell in love but... it wasn't the kind of love we have. It was... ordinary... and we had kids, and we got old and died together... we may be broken people Skye but what we have- no. What we've been through it's lead us to something so much more than love, we're each others life. Ordinary people, they get over loves, with time. But Skye. If we leave each other, here today, if this is truly over, I don't know about you but... I wont make it.'
She swallowed the lump she'd been holding in her throat and made her way over to me.
'Let it be over Adam... let's go buy that house and have those babies and get old and die together, shall we?'
I smiled at her, tears pricking my eyes.
She closed the small gap between us that before had felt like a whole world and we immediately met each other in a fragile kiss.
The emotions I felt when she first kissed my lips all rushed back to me.
I felt alive again.
