The results had came back, and Cameron indeed was the father. It had come to me as not only a huge sigh of relief, but also an eye opener. I had to stop trying to help Alex. There were multiple ways to help him, and cheating on Cameron was not one of them.
"Hey Cam, I'll be back, I'm gonna go to the store." I said. He smiled and nodded, taking a seat on the couch. I knew where I was really going though. It had to stop now. I was pregnant, with Cameron's baby. I was married to Cameron. Alex Would have to find other ways to heal himself.
I stepped up to his apartment door, my heart beating faster than ever. I hesitated to knock, but finally gave in. He answered the door with a worried look.
"It's about damn time." He said. "Where have you been? And what's going on with you?" I was appalled by his treatment towards me. I had spent two weeks doing everything possible to make him happy, and this was how he chose to treat me.
"I can't do this anymore Alex." I stated staring down. I didn't want to make eye contact with him. I knew he'd give me those big brown eyes, and I'd fall right back into his trap.
"Why not? What are you talking about Mack, I thought this would work?" Alex paced back and forth. "You told me you'd help me, and now you're backing out?"
"ALEX! IM PREGNANT." I yelled hoping to get the point across. He stopped where he was pacing and looked at me. His face went completely white.
"Don't worry you're not the father, Cameron is." I whispered. The color reentered his face, but the sadness wouldn't leave.
"Oh." Was all he managed to get out.
"I just can't do this anymore Alex. I get it. You're upset and you need someone, but i can't be that person anymore." I said with despair.
I hoped I could get across to him as stubborn as he could be sometime. Enough, had been enough.
"We can still be friends Alex, we just can't do this anymore."
Alex nodded, and I felt a sigh of relief come over me. One that I had been waiting on for a very long time.
"Are you coming to dinner tonight?" I asked trying to break the awkwardness, in the room. Alex walked over to his bed, and took a seat. His hands fiddled with the sheets.
"I don't know." He mumbled. I gave him a glare.
"Seriously? Come on Alex." I begged. He was still family to me. I still wanted to help in any way I could.
"Alright." He finally gave in. I smiled at him, and thanked him. I turned to walk back out the door, and looked back at him before leaving.
"And Alex?" I called to make sure he was listening.
"Yeah?"
"There's someone out there for you. I promise you'll find her." I hoped to give him some sense of hope, he deserved that. He did have hope, and a future. He was attractive, funny, sweet, so open-minded, and he wanted nothing more than to give a girl the world. I admired that, it just hadn't been for me.
"Thank you, Mack." He gave me a little wave, and I shut the door.
I walked back into mine and Cameron's apartment. He sat in the same spot that I'd left him in, watching television.
"I thought you went to the store?" He said looking at me in confusion. I had forgotten that I had returned empty-handed.
"I was, but I forgot my wallet." I lied hoping that, that would be enough to get him off the fact that I was at Alex's.
"Oh alright." He laughed.
"Still want pizza?" I asked. "And where's Calex?"
"Yes, and she's with Kylie, they went to go do "girl things" as Kylie would put it. You know she really missed you Mack." He stood up and walked towards where I was standing as he continued to talk. I had missed Kylie too, but I couldn't just jump back into being best friends.
"She didn't accept us then, what makes you think she's going to accept us now?" I said searching the cabinets for something to snack on. Cameron took a seat at the bar.
"Because she told me, Mack. She said she was okay with it. She just missed you." He said blankly.
"I just need time you know?" I replied. Cameron rolled his eyes.
"Of course time." He said sarcastically. My eyes shot up at him.
"Excuse me?" I asked feeling offended. I would've shaken this off, but the way he said it, made me sound as if... As if I had been cheating on him... And I had been. "I'm sorry, I'm just having a hard time."
Cameron looked at me with a weird look on his face, as if he was trying to figure me out all over again. He wouldn't be able to do it though. I couldn't even figure my own self out, which had always been a problem for me. I was a confusing and twisted person, there was simply no other way to put it.
Cameron's facial expression changed when he seen mine change.
"Hey you okay?" He asked sounding different this time. I nodded hoping that he would take that answer as being enough and move on. Thankfully he did.I had never been one to come from big family dinners, or family dinners at all for that matter. Having my own, "big" family so to speak, had made such an impact on me, but it had also been my own burden.
I felt as if I had to help everyone when something went wrong, and from what you can tell, I would do just about anything to fix someone.
That was the problem though.
I wanted to fix someone else, put them back together, when I, myself, wasn't even glued back properly. Of course I'd been managing to pick up the pieces to myself here and there, but no one had glued me back together yet. Cameron would eventually be the one to do it, I was sure.
It was hard for me to watch Alex go through such pain. To watch someone love another person, is truly a tragic event in itself. I know I could never know exactly how he felt, but that didn't change the fact that I was hurting for him. I had meant what I said to him though. He would find someone. It would just take time and patience.
We all sat around the big dining room table, as Madeline passed out paper plates, for our pizza. Cameron entered holding 4 huge boxes of pizza and placed them in the center of the table.
Alex helped Calex into her chair and pushed her close to the table, helping her to reach her place.
And for once I felt normal again, as if our little family was alright. And maybe being alright just for a little bit is more soothing than none.
