"Kaewa, everything is going to be okay." Leanne kept repeating softly to her five year old daughter, whom she clutched tightly towards herself as she and her husband Thomas Knightly ran, distancing themselves from the fiery explosion behind. "Everything's...okay." Kaewa repeated staring at the smoke rising from their burning country house. Thomas looked over his shoulder and saw creatures emerging from the smoke...the creatures that had set their house on fire. "I'll handle the Geno-morphs, take Kaewa and hide." He motioned Leanne to go on. He turned towards the approaching creatures and stood his ground. Suddenly his hands lit on fire as it spread from his fingertips to his shoulder blades as if they were doused in gasoline. Kaewa watched as her father began fighting the Geno-morphs. The larger ones were strong and began tossing cars at him. He dodged some and burned holes through others so that he could pass through. Four of the big creatures ganged up on her father keeping him busy, while the smaller clawed ones lurked in the darkness, behind him. He threw balls of fire at them as well while he fought of the bigger ones. He disarmed a few and blinded some by shooting fire at their eyes. One of the creatures crept up behind him and pierced its sharp tail through his lungs. He caught it by the tail lighting it on fire before he fell to his knees gasping for breath. The Geno-morphs stood around her father in a semi-circle, as if waiting. As the smoke began to clear, a sinister looking man became visible as he walked towards Thomas. "My, my...how the mighty have fallen." He said in a deep cold voice sending involuntary shivers down Kaewa's spine. The lines of Geno-morphs parted to allow their master through before closing up immediately. Thomas threw balls of flames at them. The man simply dodged effortlessly whilst the Geno-morphs burst into flames one by one. Thomas slowly got to his feet and fashioned two swords out of the flames dancing over his hands. "You'll never get them." Thomas said. He could feel the blood filling inside his lungs, making it harder for him to breathe. "The light in a hero's heart..." The man snickered. He swiftly ducked Thomas' weakened thrusts with his blazing swords and pulled out a blade from his boot and stabbed Thomas in the heart. "Must be extinguished, Thomas." He smiled as he watched the life disappear from Thomas' eyes.
Kaewa felt her eyes well up and she could barely see. She hugged her mother tightly. "It's all right, baby." Leanne whispered as she tried to stay strong. She reached a deserted alleyway behind a storage unit and knelt down hiding Kaewa behind a few garbage cans, hoping to mask her scent. "Kaewa hide. Mama seek." Leanne said softly and kissed her forehead, trying to pretend this was all just a game, to keep Kaewa at ease. She rose up to leave. "Mama!" Kaewa whispered. She had a dreadful feeling that she'd never see her mother again. Leanne knelt beside her. "Everything going to be..." she began with tears in her eyes slowly rolling down the rosy cheeks of her angular face. "Okay." Kaewa completed and reached out her tiny fingers to her mother's cheek and wiped away her tears. "Yes." Leanne said lovingly as she squeezed Kaewa's small hand gently between her own cheek and her shoulder. "Daddy and mama love you." She whispered and Kaewa nodded, the way she did when she wanted to say she loved them too. Leanne rose up and took a deep breath as she left for the streets. Kaewa got up and walked towards the beginning of the alleyway and peeked softly at the edge of the wall, and watched her mother run. Her eyes glistened. The creatures that had killed her father now caught up to her mother, surrounding her. She watched as her mother fought them off, by moving them with her mind and crashing them against the wall, a trick she had shown Kaewa to amuse her on more than one occasion. One of the creatures sent a slimy vine like projection throttling towards Leanne, which she dodged skilfully. Then all of a sudden many such creatures projected the vine like structure twisting tightly around her hands feet and neck. The man walked up to her. "This can all end. It can all still go away, Leanne. Just tell me where the weapon is." He smiled. She was silent as she looked at the lifeless body of Thomas just a few feet away and she blinked back her tears. "Do your worst." She said through clenched teeth. He moved backwards and motioned one of the clawed creatures forward. It came towards Leanne with a slight smile tugging at the corners of its lips. It then pierced its claw through Leanne's heart and she let out an ear-splitting cry as she died, hoping that it would attract people towards them so that at least Kaewa would be safe. The creatures dropped Leanne's lifeless body. "Go! Find the weapon!" the man barked and the creatures ran in different directions trying to locate her. Kaewa ran towards the bins where her mother had hid her and squeezed inside concealing herself. She closed her eyes, hugged her knees. "Everything's okay." She kept saying as she rocked herself forward and backwards like it was a chant. She felt a shadow fly overhead. She opened her eyes and saw a large bat shaped shadow land softly beside her. It moved towards her. She stretched out her hand towards the scary creature as if she wasn't afraid. The tips of her fingers began vibrating so fast giving the illusion of it disappearing as sparks of purple danced around her fingers. The creature came out of the shadows to reveal itself as a man in a black costume, black cape and the sign of a bat on his chest. She recognized the symbol. She lowered her hand and let this strange man pick her up. He moved quickly and quietly placing her in his vehicle and drove towards her house, the Knightly Manor in the city of Starheights.Batman looked over at the tiny shivering frame of Kaewa that sat in the passenger seat of the bat-mobile. He could see the sadness in her eyes as she did her best not to cry and stare out the window instead. This shouldn't have happened. This was a simple recon mission the Knightlys had taken on. How did it all go so wrong? How would he tell this to Tempest? In a few hours he reached the Knightly Manor and gently picked up Kaewa in his arms. She had streams of tears down her cheeks and she looked exhausted. She had cried herself to sleep. Batman walked to the front door and knocked. The door was quickly opened by a man in his mid-thirties wearing a sharp black suit. He looked stunned for half a minute as he stared at Batman. But he noticed the little girl in Batman's arms and relief swept over his features as he let Batman inside the house before closing the door just as quickly. As Batman entered the living room he heard the voice of the news reporter on the television. He set Kaewa down gently on the couch. "The massive fire at the Knightly's summer-house has just been extinguished and search and rescue parties have been deployed in search of the Billionaire Thomas Knightly his wife Leanne Knightly and his younger daughter Kaewa Knightly. Authorities are still investigating as to what caused the fire. The fire Marshalls have already filed a preliminary report with the likely cause of the explosion being a gas leak. We are looking at the live video..." The female news reporter was saying. Batman switched off the television. "What about her parents?" the man cleared his throat; he knew what was coming but hoped for better news. "Killed." Batman said. The man felt his heart sink. "I will make funeral arrangements." The man said softly. Batman nodded and headed out. The man gently carried Kaewa into her room and laid her down on her bed between her bed covers. He gently wiped her tears and planted a kiss on her forehead before turning down the lights and going back to the living room.
Batman drove back towards the cave. He checked the time on the dashboard '2:30 AM' it read. Tempest would definitely be there at this late an hour. He pulled up into the cave and walked towards the monitors. Tempest wore her dark blue costume and her mask was on the floor beside her as she sat in front of the main frame punching in characters. 'Access denied.' The female robotic voice of the computer said loudly. "Not for long." Tempest grinned putting her hacker skills into play. She heard footsteps behind her and looked up grinning sheepishly. She had been as usual in a mood to play a prank on batman. The grin on her face disappeared when she saw the seriousness of his face. Something was up. Something that wasn't her prank. Something bad. She realized. She rose up from the chair and moved back. Batman walked to the keyboard and typed in a few characters. "Access Granted." The computer said. He pressed a button and pulled up the news feed into the monitor and stared at the keyboard. "The events of today that began with the explosion of the Knightly summer house and disappearance of the Knightly family are still being investigated." The reporter began, Batman heard a gasp from behind him but didn't turn and face her, and "The initial assumption of the explosion being caused by a gas leak has now been withdrawn seeing as to the fact that billionaire Thomas Knightly and his wife Leanne Knightly were found murdered in the alleyways of James and ninth street..." the news reporter was saying. Batman reeled around quickly on hearing a loud thud and found Tempest on the floor crying. He knelt down beside her and she fell into his arms with continued sobbing. "Kaewa?" Tempest asked burying her face in his costume to hide her tears. "She is in Knightly Manor now." Batman assured Tempest holding her as a brother would a sister. "How?" Tempest asked referring to the Knightly's deaths. "They had already died when I got there. Kaewa was the only survivor." Batman said. "I don't know how." He admitted. "But I will find out." Batman vowed.
