1 DAY LATER.
“Death comes to all. It may seem unfair and cruel but it is the way of life. Today the city of Starheights mourns the loss of two of the most respected pillars of our society who did everything to make this city a better place...” The pastor was saying, but Kaewa wasn’t listening. She looked around her. There were camera crews filming the funeral and some kept turning their focus on her to see her crack.
The whole city had come to pay respects to her parents. The whole city had come to see her parents after they had died. Where were they? Where were they when her parents were being hunted? Where were they when they were being murdered? Where were they when she watched her parents getting slaughtered? Her eyes became watery and she could barely see. ‘No.’ she thought glancing at the news crews. ‘No’ she decided. She wouldn’t break down in front of them. She wouldn’t let them see her cry. She squeezed her eyes shut willing the tears to go away. She was surrounded by men, women and children in black clothes. She was surrounded by at least a few thousand people but she had never felt so alone. So lost. All alone in this world. Albert placed his hands over her shoulders, hoping to console her. She snapped back into real time. “God loved them so dearly for all that they have done for their fellow man that he took them to a better place…” the pastor was saying. She felt a pair of eyes on her and she turned around slightly to see a figure hiding behind the tall tree in their garden. The figure was a girl dressed in a black knee-length dress, her long hazel coloured hair French braided to a side. The girl looked at Kaewa with sad eyes and then the caskets in front as if apologizing. ‘Kylin.’ Kaewa whispered in recognition. Kaewa looked around to check if anyone was watching her. She ducked from under Albert’s hands and made her way towards the tree, unnoticed. But as soon as she reached the tree she found no one. There were two white roses on the grass beside the tree. She bent down and picked it up. “Thomas and Leanne Knightly, you will be missed.” The pastor ended.
