Steve didn't like it when Bucky left.

The whole apartment was lonely. A Disney movie played quietly in the background as Steve paced his and Bucky's shared apartment.

It's been two hours now, Steve thought Grumpily.
How long can a bird man and an ex assassin train for?

"Are you sure you want to go with him? " Steve had asked.

Bucky had just laughed and nodded. "If I can't take a training practice with Big Bird here, then I'm really beat out of shape. "
He had smiled to assure Steve that he would be alright.

But what if Sam had been too hard on him?

Bucky hadn't been training as much recently, he'd just been taking it easy.

It probably didn't help that he always wanted Steve to make him lasagna, either.

There was a knock at the door, bringing Steve from his thoughts. He exhaled deeply as he opened the door.

"Your friend is seriously out of shape, man. " Sam said right away.

Steve looked over Sam's shoulder and saw no Bucky.

"Where's Buck? " he asked, frowning.

Right on cue, Bucky came hobbling up to the doorway. He had a black eye, a bruised cheek, and he was clearly sore from the way he was unnaturally walking.

Steve glared at Sam, clenching his jaw. "Sam! He hasn't trained in three months, why would you go an-"

Bucky interrupted with a laugh. "Steve, really, I'm fine. "

"Yeah, he took it like a man, Steve. " Sam cut in.

"Well, still, you hurt him! Look at him! He's all bruised, and it looks like his lip is bleeding! " Steve grabbed Bucky's wrist and pulled him into the apartment, rushing him into the bathroom.

Steve patted the countertop. "Sit right here, ba-" he stopped and cleared out his throat. "Bucky. Sit there, Bucky. "

Bucky grinned at him as he did as he was told. "What were you gonna call me, Stevie? "

Steve blushed as he looked down, inspecting Bucky's bruised knee. "I said Bucky. My words got tangled that's all. "

Bucky laughed and he shook his head. "But what's all this fuss about? I'm not really hurt. " He straightened his knee out and popped his neck, and if to prove his point to his over protective friend.

Steve shook his head. "You haven't trained for a while, Buck. He should have went easy. "

"Went easy! " Bucky exclaimed. "He punches like a baby! I could've taken him, if it weren't for the wings. " The grown man crossed his arms and pouted like a toddler.

"Hey, I'm still here, tin man! " Sam called from where he sat in the living room, eating leftover lasagna.

Sighing, Steve got an ice pack for his friend's swollen eyelid and applied it gently, pulling back when Bucky winced.

"Does it hurt? " Steve asked gingerly.

Bucky shook his head. "Nah." He took the ice pack from Steve and held it to his eye.

He then lowered his voice and asked Steve, "Really though, Stevie, why are you being like this? "

Steve sighed again as he pondered what he should say. If he told Bucky how much he feared seeing him get hurt again, Bucky would probably pull away.

"Steve? " Bucky asked again.

The blonde ran his fingers through his hair nervously as he sat down next to his friend. "I don't want you to ever get hurt. You've been through enough, Buck. "

Smiling slightly his friend answered, "Now you know how I felt when I had to drag you out of fights in Brooklyn. I was so worried that one day. . ." his voice hitched in his throat. "I was worried that one day, you'd really done it for yourself. " He shook his head. "I don't think I could take it, Stevie." he turned his eyes to the ground.

Steve stood up and placed his hand on Bucky's shoulder. "That is exactly how I feel, Buck. I can't lose you again. " He looked into the other man's eyes, wondering if he knew just how intense his emotions were for him.

Bucky smiled as he returned Steve's gaze, his metal hand shyly wrapping around Steve's. "You won't. "
