Sitting on a slab of concrete while watching the sun set past the tall trees, sitting next to a twelve year old boy was not how I expected to be spending most of my day.

"Nice hat" I said to the boy "Where did you get it from"  I asked with a small smile, trying to make conversation.

"Its was my dads" He said " He is, or was, a sheriff in our town" He mumbled as he seemed to stare harder at the sky.

"So whats your name" I asked the boy as I turned to face him.

Turning to face me, he looked at me with a blank look on his face. "Carl, Carl Grimes" He said as he held his hand out for me to shake.

I took his hand while replying "Beatr-" He cut me off before I could finish.

"Beatrix Black" He said with no emotion " I was there when you introduced yourself to my dad" He said as he looked back at the slowly setting sun.

"Huh" I mumbled as I started playing with the small rocks that sat upon the concrete. "So how old are you?" I asked quietly as I continued to play with the rocks, rolling them between my fingers.

"Im not really sure anymore. I think I'm 13" He said as he also started playing with the small rocks.

"I guess no-one really keeps track of time these days" I mumbled as I threw one of the larger rocks into the courtyard. "I don't know what the-"

Buzz

"What the?!"  I swatted away the pesky mosquito the was buzzing around my ear. "Bloody pain in my ass those things" I said as I slapped my leg really hard where one was trying to feast off of me.

"There are walking dead people outside of those gates that are ready to tear you to pieces any chance they get and your worried about a small mosquito bite" He said with a hint of amusement in his voice. I could see the amusement written all over his face as I looked at him with a blank stare.

" I would rather not be covered in a bunch of pesky itchy bites from Satans Fairies thank you" I quipped back as I wiped the remains of the bug off my leg. I jumped slightly when I heard him break out into a fit of laughter. I wouldn't expect it from him because he was acting really depressed earlier on. And I could tell that he had seen things that no 13 year old should have to see.

"What are you two laughing at" A new voice said. And as I turned around I realised that it was Rick that had spoken. But behind him was a blonde teen, who looked a few years older that Carl. What shocked me was that she was holding a baby. Not a toddler, but a new born baby.

"Whats the verdict, Sheriff?" I ask quietly as I stand up and wipe my hands on my shorts. I really hope that he and the rest of them had decided to let me stay. It would be nice to spend the end of the world as we know it with actual living, emphasis on living, human beings. That are considerably nice, I mean they haven't tried to kill me yet. And I hope it will stay that way.

"What do you think you can contribute, to this group, this family?" He asked as he looked me in the eye.

"I'm pretty good at killing those thin-.. The walkers" I corrected myself "And I can scavenge, I'm pretty good at getting in and out of tight situations. I feel that if you accept me you won't regret it." I said as I stared back with just as much intensity as he was looking at me with. I looked at Carl beside me quickly, he was looking at his father with a small smile on his face.

This must of convinced Rick because he said "Well then, welcome to the group" with a small nod. "I will get Daryl to talk to you as soon as there is something that you can do" He said before walking away, not before giving a quick nod and a small smile towards Carl. The teen also followed with the babbling baby in her arms.

Carl looked at me with a small smile "I'm glad your staying, you seem like a really nice person" he said. And for some reason it made me feel really happy. Like something washed over me that I haven't felt in a long time. And that was the feeling of being wanted. When people actually wanted to be in your presence and spend time with you. I felt tears of happiness gather in my eyes before I blinked them away.

Smiling back at Carl I said "Im glad Im staying too." With a small playful shove to Carls shoulder I said "So are you going to show me around or what?" A big grin on my face as I looked at him.

He grinned back at me before grabbing my hand and pulling me inside "Theres so many things to see and people to meet" He said as he dragged me along. And as we were going along, I bought Ricks eye across the room, he gave me a small nod, which I assume was of appreciation but you never know with human emotions. I gave him a small smile before turning around to face the blonde teen from before, but this time she wasn't holding the small child.

"Bea, this is Beth" Carl said with a smile as he gestured to the blonde teen, who I now know as Beth "Beth this is Bea" He said as he gestured to me. Me and Beth both looked at each other with amusement at the kids enthusiasm before shaking back others hands.

"Nice to meet your acquaintance Beth" I said with a small chuckle.

"Nice to meet you to Bea, I hope we can be good friends" She said with a giggle as she ruffled Carls hair, resulting in his hat falling on the floor.

"Hey!" He said to beth as he picked up his hat, giving a playful glare to Beth before grabbing my hand again and dragging me of towards someone else.

Again not a very long chapter.
