The thunder roared as the boys and I ate pizza. We were scattered all over the living room. Brannon was in a blue bean bag chair, using a pizza box as a plate. Doogie with in a red butterfly chair, occasionally throwing pepperoni pieces at Brannon. Chasey Ray and Porter were having an ice fight in the kitchen. I was sprawled out on the couch, resting my feet on Chris. I roamed my eyes over his body. His eyes focused on the tv, his light brown hair was in a mess, he had a long sleeved Tennessee Wraith Chaser shirt on with gray basketball shorts. We are just friends, but I've always wanted more than that, I'm the type of girl that knows what she wants, and Chris is definitely what I want. I'm tired of pretending that we can be just friends, pretending is for little kids. I started playing with my blonde hair, a habit when I get agitated.
"What's wrong Maggie?" Chris asked, putting his plate down.
"I just need a walk." I couldn't say I had to leave because I kinda live with Chris and Brannon and it would cause a fight.
"But it's rainin!" Brannon exclaimed with a mouthful of pizza.
"It's just water, I don't need protection, Brannon," I replied softly. I walked out the door with Chris right on my heels.
"Bab-" he stopped himself from finishing that word. I spun around and he was rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't mean to say that," he corrected himself.
"Chris," was all I said.
"What's been up lately? You've been kinda moody and distant."
"I just can't pretend like we can be friends! I love you, but I don't how you feel or where you're at!" I had to holler over the pouring rain. My hair had darkened from being wet. Chris's hair stuck to his forehead from being wet.
"Maggie, I love you, too. But, my job. It's way too dangerous, it wouldn't be a real relationship, I'd never be home."
"I'm so tired of all of y'all thinking that y'all have to protect me 24/7! I'm a grown woman, I can look out for myself! I just want you by my side. But I guess that's too much to ask for," I trailed off and turned to continue walking. Chris out his hand on my shoulder and spun my around. Crashing his lips to mine. It was the perfect first kiss. I pulled back and met his eyes. He was on the verge of crying a bit.
"What was that?" I asked, looking down at my feet.
"I don't want you to leave. I love looking forward to coming home to you when I'm gone. You're my dream. Don't be my nightmare. Please, Maggie. Stay." His voice cracked a couple times. I smiled and hugged him. He kissed the side of my head and we turned to walk in. All of the boys were looking out the window and cheering. Chasey Ray was swinging a shirt in the air. Thunder boomed and it scared me. I jumped into Chris's side. He leaned down and whispered,
"I'll protect you."
