Cars fill the once empty parking lot of the Starr Motel. My eyes blinked and squinted from the array of light passing through the window of my 2015 tesla model S which was a gift to me on my 21st birthday from my parents. My eyes finally adjusted to the light. I heard voices that seemed to be yelling so I looked to my right and saw a tall man screaming ridiculously to girl who looked to be frightened and slightly embarrassed due to the few people looking at the scene, me included.
Looking at the pair, I winced as I saw the man raise his right hand, as if he wanted to hit the young woman, but slowly put his hand back to its original spot as he timidly looked at the growing crowd forming around them.
By now the woman had started to try to calm, what I assume her man, down. But that action seemed to only make him more riled up. It got to the point where the man hopped into an old, rusty, pickup truck and left the girl, who had fell to her knees on the dirty gravel in shock and despair.
Some of the nosy onlookers ran to tend to the young girl but I just sat back in my car feeling sorry her and myself.
In many ways, I can see myself in the younger girl. So deeply in love that she would do anything, put up with anything, just to be with the one she loves. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way, love is toxic. Only those who have been through that, who have experienced that type of pain like myself, can understand. Though, you never actually know until you're out of that sort of relationship.
"Mommy?" I looked at my baby boy to see him yawning and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
"Yes, baby?"
"Where we?" Him being two his English wasn't the best.
"I don't know baby. Just sit back. We should be almost there." I honestly didn't know where we were. I hadn't seen a sign since late in the afternoon yesterday but it did say Newark, New Jersey which is very close to where Kelly is.
Kelly is my best friend who moved to New York with her long-term boyfriend before Jordan was born. I haven't seen her in person but we always kept in touch. Now that her and her boyfriend broke up she agreed to let Jordan and I stay with her until I found a job and got back on my feet.
All I wanted to do was get away from home. I needed to. Too many people there that bring back bad memories.
As I tried to figure out where and how we were going to get to Kelly's apartment, I saw an old, white man who looked like he was a second away from dying approaching my car out of the side view mirror.
"Hello sir." I said with a fake smile.
"Hello ma'am. Are you a guest at the motel?" He inhaled every few words, chewing tobacco. I fought back the urge to gag from his breath.
