#11.5 (Sneak Peek)
Summary:
Michael is an attending internist when he meets someone that eventually changes his life forever.
(This isn't exactly a one shot but it is a sneak peek to a story I am working on! Please read the AN for more info if you like this!)"So, the new interns are coming today," Geoff announced. Jack, Ryan, Ray, and I all nodded.
"Remember when we first started, Michael? We screwed up so much," Ray started laughing. I rolled my eyes.
"Don't you mean you? I hardly ever screwed up," I told him.
"You didn't screw up because you were too scared to do any of the procedures," Geoff said. I felt my cheeks turn red in embarrassment and I shoved Geoff, causing his stethoscope to fall off.
"Hey! Watch it! This thing costs more than you make," Geoff told me as he picked up the stethoscope.
"But I make quite a bit of money," I pointed out. Geoff laughed and shrugged.
"Don't tell Griffon I spent that much on a stethoscope," Geoff said. We all laughed and watched the doors swing open and the new interns come in.
Geoff clapped his hands and welcomed the new interns. He assigned Jack, Ryan, Ray, and I groups of interns that we had to keep track of and monitor. Ray and Ryan both led their interns to the surgical ward, since they were both surgeons. Jack led his down the hall towards the newer patients that came in yesterday evening. Geoff pulled me to the side before I led my interns off.
"Hey, Michael, I want you to give special attention to that intern, okay," Geoff pointed to a sandy blonde intern. He had a big nose but it honestly looked pretty nice on him.
"He graduated college and medical school top of his class. His professors told me he is literally gifted," Geoff continued. I nodded and he pat my shoulder and walked back to his office. Chief of medicine. Lucky.
I rounded up my interns and gave them a quick introduction of myself. This wasn't my first group of interns but I certainly still was a bit of a newbie at teaching. I'd have to peek in on Jack's teachings to make sure I was doing the right thing from time to time.
I led the interns around the hospital, showing them places that they'd soon be able to memorize the locations to. They all listened intently and they followed me quickly.
After the tour of the hospital I led them to some of my patients. They'd be helping me with them for the first few weeks before I'd request for certain people to have their own patients.
As I was talking, my interns were writing stuff down. Probably things they'd need to know about the patients. I noticed the sandy blonde giggling with another blonde intern and I decided to call him out on it.
"You, what's your name," I asked him, not bothering to look at my chart.
"Dr. Free," He answered quickly, giving me a smug look.
(Italics) So, that's the game you're gonna play at.
"Well, Dr. Free, can you tell me why this patient is experiencing abdominal pain?" I asked him, narrowing my eyes at him.
He smirked, as if accepting my challenge, and walked closer to the patient.
"Upon closer look, I can see this patient is experiencing bloating. I can also see that he is having painkillers put into him. So I can conclude that he most likely has ulcers," Dr. Free smiled and walked back to his spot.
I looked at the chart and was surprised to see he was actually correct.
(Italics) Geoff was right...
"Very good, Dr. Free. But I'd like you to continue paying attention," I told him as I continued onto the next patient.The rest of the day went like that. Dr. Free would mess around and I'd make him explain what is wrong with one of my patients. He would explain what is wrong with them with little effort and he would get it exactly right.
By the end of the day, the interns seemed excited for the next day when I'd let them do some procedures. Dr. Free seemed to be the most confident about it. His cocky attitude was really beginning to piss me off but since he was my student, I couldn't exactly tell him off.
When the interns were getting ready to leave, Geoff, Jack, Ryan and Ray came back to the lobby to see off the interns. I noticed Geoff pull Dr. Free aside and whisper to him. I rolled my eyes, already knowing Geoff was taking a liking to him.
I looked at my watch and knew my second shift started now. Geoff had asked me to be on call tonight since he didn't have much staff working tonight.
Geoff pulled Dr. Free over to me and waved good bye to Jack, Ryan and Ray.
"Michael, I want you to teach Gavin some more about the hospital. And what better time to do it then at night," Geoff smiled at me.
I gave him a slight glare and gave Gavin a cocky smile. Geoff looked between the two of us and nodded, patting my arm and whispering to me.
"Get along with him. He's as talented as you are," He told me before leaving the hospital.
I watched him leave before turning to Gavin. He gave me a small smile and shrugged his shoulders.
"Okay... If you're going to be following me around like a lost puppy all night, might as well make yourself useful," I growled at him.
I went over to the charts and grabbed six of my patients charts. The nurse gave me a small smile, knowing I wasn't in the mood to talk. I shoved the charts into Gavin's hands and watched him give me a bewildered look.
"Follow me," I beckoned him.
I walked quickly down the hallways, Gavin leaping and jogging to keep up with me. I entered one of my patients rooms making Gavin stop dead and try to follow me.
"Oh, Dr. Jones," One of my favorite patients giggled. I smiled at her and walked over to her.
Gavin smiled too and stood on the opposite side of the bed.
"Chart," I ordered.
"Patient name?" Gavin said smugly. I rolled my eyes and opened my mouth to say it.
"Ruby Rods. And you are?" Ruby answered for me.
"Dr. Gavin Free," Gavin answered. He started going through the charts until he found Ruby's.
"I saw quite a few more people in scrubs. What's been going on, Dr. Jones?" Ruby asked me.
"New interns," I told her, smiling.
Something I had picked up about Ruby was that she was extremely observant. It actually ended up benefitting her when she was admitted into the hospital. She had been complaining to her husband about cramps in her leg and a few other symptoms and it ended up being more serious then she thought. It had been a tumor that Ray and Ryan both ended up taking out during surgery. Ruby was actually one of my favorite patients since she was always so kind and patient. Ray and Ryan visited her frequently, saying they needed to do 'scans' which I knew was their traditional excuse to see patients more often.
"I see. And you, Dr. Free, are you one of these new interns?" Ruby asked. Gavin nodded and smiled.
"Ah, well I'll let you in on a secret. Dr. Jones may act all mean and tough all the time, but he's really a big teddy bear. Use that to your advantage," Ruby winked at Gavin, causing Gavin to smile and look up at me smugly.
I rolled my eyes, finishing my analyst of Ruby's vitals. I snapped my fingers at Gavin and pointed to the door. He picked up the charts and went out the door while I smiled at Ruby.
"Good night, Ruby. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask," I told her. She nodded and smiled before I turned and left the room.The rest of the night mostly went like that. Checking up on certain patients while they were going to sleep. I made sure Gavin was watching closely, testing him a few times about the conditions of some of the patients.
When I was going to my last patient, I heard a couple nurses running down the hallways towards me. I looked up at them and saw them giving me urgent gestures.
"Car accident. All the doctors are busy. We need your help," Lindsay, one of the two nurses said.
I nodded and grabbed my last patients chart before shoving it into the hands of the other nurse.
"Details," I asked Lindsay as we rushed down to the emergency room.
"One patient is experiencing heart failure. Another had a large gash on their stomach that is bleeding out. The youngest is experiencing lack of oxygen," Lindsay told me. I ran over the procedures that needed to be performed in my head. I looked back at Gavin.
"You ready?" I asked him. He gave me a scared look but nodded anyway.
We burst into the emergency room. Their was a crowd of nurses surrounding the three patients. I snapped my fingers at them to move out of the way and started treating the patient with heart failure.
I started pumping the mans chest, counting to five each time before leaning down and listening for his heart beat. I did this five times until his heart rate was back to normal.
"Dr. Free, put the IV in his arm," I ordered him. Gavin nodded slowly before pushing the IV in and making sure it was flowing into him.
I proceeded onto the next patient. The patient with the gash in her side. I ordered one of the nurses to start stitching up the patient and to stop the blood flow.
I turned to the last patient, a little boy. I quickly pulled my stethoscope off and listened for a heartbeat. There was one, but it was very shallow. He wasn't breathing correctly either, making me think he might have a collapsed lung.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I apologize for that incredibly abrupt ending. Since this is just a sneak peek I didn't want to give away too much. Also, this is something I wrote a while ago and I didn't want to mess with it so... Yeah.
Anyway, details about this. This is a story I have had planned for a while. I actually have the first five chapters for it completed however the storyline changed a little. Like for example, instead of the entire story being in Michael's POV, it's going to be in Gavin's. And each chapter is going to start off a little differently. If I publish it you'll see what I was going for, I promise.
Anyway, please please please let me know what you think of this! I'd really like to know if you like this, cause if you do, I'll start posting the chapters I have completed.
Thanks for reading!
