#15
Summary:
Michael and Gavin grow up together however whenever they get together, it seems their encounters involve a lot more than they bargained for.
I heard my fellow classmates scream as we were allowed outside for recess. I chased after them, my smile still ever present on my face.
I chased after my classmates, starting a game of tag without even officially starting it. I heard them scream and laugh as the tagger approached them, them screaming that they were it once they had been tagged.
I giggled and smiled as I ran away from the taggers. I had always been pretty fast so I hadn't been tagged yet.
Suddenly, I heard a quiet whimpering noise and I stopped running. I turned towards the noise and saw a young boy crying in the sandbox. His bright blonde hair shined gold in the hot afternoon sunlight. I slowly approached him, dropping down next to him.
"Why are you crying?" I asked him in my high pitched six year old voice.
The boy slowly looked up at me with tear filled eyes. His eyes were an astonishing green, much more pretty than any green that I had seen before.
"I lost my favorite toy in the sand," The boy said in a tiny, sad, accented voice.
I sighed and took pity on him. I wouldn't know what to do if I had lost my favorite stuffed bear. So, I jumped into the sand and started digging around, pushing my tiny hands into the sand as far as I could before pulling them out in defeat.
I did this for the entire recess block. I longed to be running around with my fellow first graders but my mother had always taught me to help someone whenever they needed it.
Eventually, when I dug my hands into the sand for probably the millionth time, I felt my fingers hit something hard. I wrapped my fingers around it and pulled it out, turning to face the blonde boy that had watched me anxiously while I looked for his toy.
I looked at it, taking note that it wasn't anything too special. Just a little plastic figurine of a dinosaur. (AN: I didn't know what Gavin's favorite toy should be so I just did my favorite toy. I used to be OBSESSED with dinosaurs.) I handed it back to him and he smiled broadly and hugged it, tears of joy springing from his eyes.
"Thank you so much!" He yelped happily.
I suddenly heard the whistle the teachers blew to signalize the end of recess. I turned towards my teacher getting ready to sprint to her until I felt a hand grab my own hand. I turned back to the boy and saw him smiling even wider.
"Wait! I have to repay you!" He said, still smiling.
I figured he was gonna give me a cool rock or something (not that I was particularly complaining since rocks were pretty interesting around here). However, instead of that, he quickly leaned forward and planted a wet kiss on my cheek.
I backed away in disgust. I pulled my sleeve down on my shirt and wiped my cheek of the spit he left behind. I stuck my tongue out in disgust and glared at him.
"Gross! Why'd you kiss me!" I growled.
"I was rewarding you! That's how my mummy rewards my daddy," He told me, shrinking away like he did something wrong.
"Well, don't kiss me!" I growled, running away from him.I felt my stomach churn as I sat down for the game of spin the bottle. I looked to my left and right, seeing a lot of my classmates also joining the game. I blushed when I saw a bunch of pretty girls sit down for the game and I silently hoped I'd get to kiss one of them.
A lot of boys joined after seeing the group of girls sit down, obviously having the same idea as me. A couple of my friends sat next to me, elbowing me and whispering about what girls they wanted to kiss.
"Okay, everyone ready to start?" Barbara asked as she sat down, a beer bottle in her hands. Everyone nodded and she crawled forward, spinning the bottle in the middle of the floor.
It ended up landing on Joel. She stood up, along with Joel and met right above the bottle. Joel leaned forwards and met Barbara's lips. Barbara kissed back and they pulled away sitting back down. I heard people in the circle start to whistle and make cat calls to the two and I eventually joined in as the game progressed.
When my friend Ray sat back down from kissing Tina, I realized with a jolt that it was my turn to spin the bottle. I gulped and stood up, spinning the bottle extra hard in the middle of the floor, hoping it landed on one of the pretty girls from earlier.
However, I felt my heart drop when it landed on Gavin Free.
I heard everyone let out a joined gasp and then some giggles. I felt embarrassment flood into my body, specifically into my cheeks as I heard everyone saying we had to kiss, that it was the rules of the game.
Gavin stood up nervously and looked around at the group around us. His demeanor suddenly changed quickly and he gave me and everyone else a cocky smile. Gavin had always been known as one of the funnier people and he didn't exactly care if people embarrassed him.
He smiled again, slamming his lips against mine. I wasn't prepared which caused the kiss to be sloppy and wet. And to make matters worse, Gavin decided it'd be funny to slip his tongue into my mouth.
I shoved him away after a good five seconds. Everyone was laughing and Gavin did a dramatic bow. I rolled my eyes and did the same, sitting back down next to Ray.
"Dude, are you blushing?!" Ray whisper-yelled to me.
"Of course not, you idiot! I'm not gay!" I growled.
However, I couldn't hide the fact that my cheeks were still a little rosy colored even as I settled down for bed.I was walking around town as the moon rose high above my head. It had to be past midnight by now and I hoped that I'd have the Colorado River to myself tonight.
However, when I walked down to my usual place, I noticed another figure sitting amongst the grass, staring down at the quickly moving water. I approached them, wondering who the hell could be here this late at night.
I suddenly recognized the bright blonde hair of Gavin Free. I wondered what he was doing here, all alone. I approached him a little faster, stopping a few feet away from him.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him.
Gavin turned his head to me, startled, and stared at me. His eyes lit up and he smiled at me for some odd reason.
"Michael Jones. God, I haven't seen you since your last year of high school. How have you been?" Gavin asked me, trying to be polite. I shrugged standing next to him, contemplating whether or not I should sit down.
"I guess I've been better. Lindsay and I broke up," I told him. Gavin looked up at me and frowned.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. If it means anything to you, Meg and I broke up too," Gavin said, staring down at his graduation cap that sat in his lap.
I decided to sit down, and stare off into the river like he had been doing before. It was nice for a little while, just listening to the sounds of nature around us and having the company of each other. Gavin and I hadn't gotten to know each other all that well but he was one of my better acquaintances.
"Hey, remember in kindergarten when I lost my toy dinosaur and you found it?" Gavin suddenly asked me.
I thought for a moment and smiled when I remembered that. I laughed a little as I realized how different I behaved back then compared to now.
"Yeah. Remember when you kissed me afterwards," I said, laughing some more. Gavin also started giggling after that.
"'That's how my mummy rewards my daddy!'" Gavin added, laughing even more.
"Or how about that time turning spin the bottle when I was thirteen. We put on quite a show, didn't we?" I said, laughing even harder. Gavin started hiccuping his laughs and tears eventually sprung up in his eyes.
"Oh god, that was by far the worst kiss I ever had with anyone, and I've kissed Meg while I was drunk," Gavin said, wiping away his tears. I nodded and let my laughter die down.
"Yeah... Clueless elementary schoolers and hopeless teenagers. I wonder what's next?" I said, smiling again. I was enjoying my time with Gavin, and I was even beginning to regret never getting to know him better when I was younger.
"Well... Maybe we should have one good kiss," Gavin suddenly suggested.
My smile disappeared at that statement. Did he really just suggest that?
But the thing that got me even more was that I wasn't denying it either.
"Are you serious?" I asked, inwardly cringing when I realized how harsh that sounded.
"Of course not! It was just a joke," Gavin said, trying his best to back peddle out of this.
"Oh... Well, I didn't mean to make that sound as harsh as it did. A third kiss actually sounds like a good idea. The first two were terrible so why not make the third one the best," I said, almost involuntarily. I didn't even want to meet Gavin's eyes out of fear he'd deny my suggestion.
"Okay," Was all he said.
I looked up and saw that he kind of moved so I wouldn't be leaning over him to kiss him. I blushed a little as I realized that this was actually happening.
"One last kiss," Gavin said, almost solemnly.
I didn't say anything. I just leaned forward and gently pressed my lips against his. Gavin instantly pressed his lips back against mine, smiling throughout the kiss. I gently laid my hand on his hip and he placed his hand on my neck.
It was a blissful ten seconds, however it ended too soon for my liking. We pulled away and gazed into each other's eyes for a moment, searching for the emotions that were definitely being felt right now.
Eventually, we both pulled away entirely and resumed our positions before. I gazed up at the stars before looking back down at the water. Then finally, I looked at Gavin's hand that laid near mine and I intertwined my fingers into his, surprised that he quickly curled his fingers around mine as well.
"I don't think that's our last kiss," I said bravely.
"Neither do I," Gavin told me, finally meeting my eyes.
And with that, we shared another long, blissful kiss under the light of the stars.
