" We have to do this," Marty said as he tightened the second tourniquet above the first one. Trisha bit Stewart on his left hand, a bloody bite around his fingers evidence of it. The skin was burnt near the edges of the bite.
After learning about the bite, Marty instantly made Stewart sit down at the kitchen table. He then applied tourniquets to Stewart's arm. The first tourniquet was made out of Marty's cloth belt, tightly tied three inches above Stewart's wrist until the blood flow stopped. The second tourniquet was fashioned out of Marty's blue pocket hankie and a spoon. It was placed three inches above the first tourniquet. Marty tied a square knot three inches above the first tourniquet. He then fed the spoon through the middle of the knot and turned it until the blood stopped flowing again. Marty then secured the spoon from untwisting with a shoelace from Trisha's shoe. If Marty cut right, Stewart would only lose his hand and 5 inches off his arm.
" Guys hurry up with the stuff," Marty yelled.
" Ok I'm coming," Sara said as she came out of the bathroom. In her arms was a box of gauze, a roll of bandage, a container of bleach, an unopened bottle of purified water, medical tape, and two green washcloth. Sara also had on different clothing. She was wearing a pinkish purple hoodie with the sleeves rolled up past her elbows and denim jeans. She also had put on a pink digital watch. She haden't changed her black work shoes.
Sara walked over to the table and put down the supplies. Marty turned around and turned on the stove to the highest setting. The stove was a state of the art range with new metal plates instead of spirals that get red hot.
" Great, now we need to let this stove heat up, and hope we have enough bandage," Marty said as he turned back around to face Sara.
" Hope," Sara questioned, " I understand that the summer camp provided first aid training, but that was for small cuts and bee stings, not a amputation."
Marty started to fidget. He reached for his pocket.
" But, I-I just," he stammered desperately trying to find an answer.
" Some medical training is better then none. Not only do I trust Marty, we need him," Stewart said.
Jasmine came out of the garage with a small crosscut saw in her hand.
" Will this saw work," Jasmine asked as she held the tool up for them to see.
" Yes that'll work. It's not rusty, is it," Marty asked.
" Its brand new. My dad gave it to me along with other tools in August."
" Great, now bring it over here," Marty said as he opened the bleach.
Jasmine walked over to Marty and gave him the saw. He took it and poured bleach along both sides of the blade. He also poured bleach along the area where the amputation was going to occur. Marty left the cap off the bleach and put it off to the side. He then picked up the saw and positioned the blade's teeth in the middle of the two tourniquets. He gently lowered the saw onto Stewart's skin.
" Ok girls I'm going to need you to hold him down. One hold his shoulders and one get his legs," Marty said.
The girls started to move but Stewart interjected.
" Wait, wait," Stewart said," I need to do something."
" Whatever it is, do it fast," Marty answered.
Stewart put his right hand into his right pocket and pulled out a little black box.
" Oh my god," Jasmine said as a tear ran down her face.
Stewart opened the box, revealing a rather expensive looking engagement ring. He pulled the ring out and threw the box off to the side.
" Now I know this might be a bad time, but I had to know, just in case something bad happens."
