In the middle of London and two stories up Lucy, a twenty-two year old photographer was putting the final touches of icing on the red velvet cupcakes that she had been baking when her phone rung, filling the room with the start of Young Blood by The Naked And Famous. She licked the icing off her fingers and gave her hands a quick wipe on the apron she was wearing before grabbing her phone that was sitting on the coffee table and answering it without looking at the caller ID.
"Hello?"
"Lulu, hey its Sam" the voice on the other end replied
"Oh hey Sam, whats up?" Lucy said, smiling as she recognised the voice. Sam was one of her closest friends. They had know eachother when they were kids and had grown up with eachother. He was her brothers best friend, and looked after her like she was his own sister.
"Hey, I'm just wondering, what are you doing for the next month or so?"
"Nothing much, I mean I have to get a few photos edited and emailed but thats about it" she replied, slightly confused wondering why he asked, as there were no special occasions or birthdays coming up "Why?, may I ask?"
"Well I have a job for you!"
"Okay cool, what is it?" she said excitedly, she was a bit low on work lately although still earned enough to get by.
"Have you heard of Bastille?"
"Yeah, you manage their tours right? They sing Pompeii. They're pretty good if you ask me"
"Thats them and they're about to tour The US and we usually have a guy who films everything and puts together a video for the fans, you know, so they can keep updated with everything." he explained quickly
"Continue..." she sat on the bar stool by her bench and started licking the nibbling bit off one of her cupcakes as she began to see where this conversation was heading.
"Well the guy that usually does it, Tom. He has a family emergency and cant make it. So, I was wondering if you would like to?" She paused for a moment, considering his offer before making up her mind
"Absolutely, sounds like fun" she replied cheerfully "When do you need me?"
"Umm, tomorrow morning..." he said gingerly, unsure if this would change her mind
"Tomorrow morning?" she repeated
"Thats the thing, the flight leaves tomorrow and the tour starts the day after we land"
"I guess I could do that" she smiled when she heard him release a breath that he didnt know he was holding.
"Great! So meet us at Heathrow at 9 and bring all your gear"
"Wait, do I need to organise plane tickets or anything like that?" remembering that she was going to actually leave the country
"No, no, we have all that sorted. We just need you"
"Okay, great. I'll see you tomorrow morning then" Lucy was starting to get excited, she had traveled around Europe with her family when she was younger and recently to Paris for a friends wedding, but she had never been to America before.
"Thanks for this by the way Lulu, I would have had to take the job on myself otherwise and you've seen my photography skills" Lucy laughed as she remembered the time where Sam had attemped to film a party only to find he had left the lens cap on "Okay, see you tomorrow Lulu"
She put her phone down and rested her chin in her hands, looking at the batch of cupcakes that she had just baked. Lucy supposed she could just give them to the old landlady down stairs, she was nice enough and they always shared recipies with eachother. She wipped off her apron and put the cupcakes into a cake carrier, ready to take them downstairs when her landlady returned.
About half and hour later Lucy had cleaned up the mess she made whilst baking. She loved baking although she wasn't the tidest person to be around. As she walked into her bedroom to start packing she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and saw that she had flour all over her face and down one side of her neck. How she managed that, she didnt know. No matter how hard she tried she would always end up with some sort of ingredient on her face or in her hair.
After a quick shower, Lucy emerged from her bathroom in her pajamas. She pulled her suitcase out from under her bed and started the tedious task of deciding what she would bring with her and what she would leave behind.
Four and a half hours, seventeen distractions, one meal and an episode of Chuck later and she was done. Lucy took a deep breath after placing her bags at the door. She had her suitcase, her camera gear and her backpack, all ready for tomorrow mornings flight. Looking at the time she decided to take the cupcakes downstairs and then retire to her bed a bit earlier, knowing she wouldn't get much sleep on the plane.
