The week went by. I dragged my self to school and didn't talk to anyone. Not my teachers, not the counsellor, not Alice and not even Toby. I couldn't live properly. I was failing in every subject at school, the teachers hated me, more than they would usually hate their students and I was constantly alone. Alice tries to help, but I just push her away. I have no money, food is scarce, and the bills are rising for my home. I cry at home, I can't sleep properly and my head aches.
It's now Sunday morning. I sit at the breakfast table and play with my food. It was always dark at home, due to the forest. Giving up on my food, I push myself away from the table and trudge to my bedroom. Everything seems dark now a days. I never have any lights on anymore, trying to save the electricity bill from getting even higher.
I fall onto my bed and curl up into a tiny ball, staring at nothing. Everything was eerie, quiet, as always. My phone has missed phone calls from Alice, but I'm not answering. Nothing would make me answer them, unless my mother was alive. If she came back from the dead, and Alice text me, I would answer her. It's not like I don't read her messages. I just ignore them.
Silence screamed in every corner of the room. Faint shadows crawled along the walls and the floor of my room. What used to be my bedroom is now a plain, boring room also known as my living quarters. I never go anywhere, I will leave the room to get food and water or to go to the bathroom.
A loud bang sounded from outside my window, making me jump. I sat up and stared out the window for a moment. Nothing jumped at me, nothing flew away. I brushed it off as a tree whacking my window. Crawling back into my ball, another bang came from the window. Already fed up with the noise, I swing my legs off my bed and storm to the window. I opened the window and stick my head out, looking down at the grass.
Toby stood, with a handful of stones in his hand. "Hey there, Stranger." He spoke, too cheery for my liking. "Put a sock in it," I spat. "What are you doing throwing rocks at my window? Wouldn't you just climb into my room like the creep you are?"
"Yes, I probably could have." He looked at me with dazzling eyes. "But I wanted to be more..." He searched for the word, averting his eyes towards the sky and pulling a 'thinking' face. "More romantic." My heart melted at his words. I haven't talked to him for about a week and he still can turn the dullness inside me into butterflies. "Why are you here anyway?"
"Are you going to invite me in?" I stared at him in disgust before changing my mind because, honestly, I missed him, and want him up in my room again.
"Fine. Come up." I moved away from the window, and in seconds, he was in my room. "So, why are you here?"
"I am here to get you out of your room."
"I don't want to." I whined, pouting.
"Well your going to because, yes, I know she was your mother and you loved her very dearly but, Scarlett, you need to move on." Did he just say that?
"Move on?" I stared at him in horror. "I can't just 'move on'! I just found my own mother dead in the forest only a week ago. She was probably been devoured by one of...you,"
"Ouch." He muttered.
"And you just want me to move on? Forget about her?"
"No," He started. "I want you to embrace the fact that..."
"That...?"
"My species must eat." He burst out laughing.
"You. You. Get out!" I pointed towards the window.
"I was joking. I'm sorry. It wasn't us though. It was one of the sirens."
"Sirens? But don't they only go for the men?" I was confused.
