"I will walk five hundred miles and I will walk five hundred more justa be the man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door!" Keith and I belted out the words as I drive down the open highway. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed him looking at me. I turned to face him and gave a smile before turning back to the road.
"Shelby," he began. "Why'd you ever pick me up?"
I laughed. "Because it's a road trip. And usually you go on road trips with friends. I was lonely and you needed a friend. So here we are."
"Yeah, so here we are," he repeated. I smiled before singing the next verse.
"When I'm lonely, well, I know I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be the man who's lonely without you." At the "you" part I gave an exaggerated gesture towards Keith, who burst out laughing. I started laughing along with him. Our laughs slipped out the open windows and into the stale summer air, to be forever lost on a Texan highway.
