*After Giant war, Percabeth goes to the same school*
Adam's POV
I'm fuming. Three times this week, Annabeth has refused my offer of a date. First, I'd asked nicely. Regular, asking-out protocol. Quietly, when it was just the two of us. She said no. I figured that I had just caught her by surprise, and that was the first thing that came out of her mouth. I know that happens sometimes. Even happened to me once, but that was when I was younger, less hot, etc.
Then, I tried showing off. I'm an ace in gym class, and okay in the classroom, so I thought it was gonna be easy. Impress her, and then ask again. She refused me again!
Lastly, I pointed out all the ways that I was superior to her boyfriend, Percy Jackson. She outright laughed in my face! Nothing worked; she was too hung up on Percy. But I just had to get her to go out with me.
All of a sudden, I get a brilliant idea!
I'll get to her through Percy. Everyone at school knows he's impulsive and protective of Annabeth. I'll challenge him to a fight, winner gets the girl. The old-fashioned way, tried and true. He's sure to agree on the spot.
*******time skip********
I wait until after school, and then head to the flagpole, where Percy and Annabeth meet up every day. Just like I predicted, Percy is there, leaning against the low wall by the flag, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He looks up as I get close.
"Hey," he says casually. Heh. He won't be so calm once the fight starts.
"We need to talk. Now," I spit, glaring at him. I'm being intimidating, putting him off balance before the punches even start. My standard battle plan.
"Sure, man, what's—oh, hold on a sec." He's spotted Annabeth, and he's waving her over. I smile. Even better. Now, he's twice as likely to agree to a fight, because his girlfriend id there, He'll want to look strong, tough—not that it'll work...
Annabeth jogs over, and Percy turns back to me.
"So, what's up?" he asks. I sneer.
"I'm challenging you, that's what. I think I would be a better boyfriend for Annabeth. Let's find out. You and me, one on one, here and now."
Percy laughs. "You're joking, right? A duel? Over Annabeth?"
"I'm serious!" I snap. Why isn't he agreeing? He looks totally calm, not off-balance at all. Am I not intimidating at all? Percy looks at Annabeth.
'Oh, here we go,' I think gleefully. Percy, however, doesn't move. He just stands there, like he's weighing his options. Come on already! I don't have all day to pummel you! Percy looks at me again, then back to Annabeth. Finally, he speaks.
"Anaklusmos?" he asks.
"What?" Now I'm the one off-balance. What is he talking about? Annabeth obviously knows, though. She rolls her eyes.
"No, Percy. It wouldn't do anything anyway," she laughs. Percy shrugs.
"Worth a try," he grins. Then he turns back to me and smiles. "Nah, man, I'm good. See you tomorrow." Then he takes Annabeth's hand and starts to walk away.
I'm stunned by Percy's cool response, and I stand frozen for a couple seconds. Then I run after the couple, angry again.
"Hey, pretty boy, 'No' isn't the right answer," I snarl. I start to pull Percy around by the shoulder, and bunch my hand into a fist, but he grabs my left arm and flips me, judo-style. I hit the ground hard, and lie there. I can't get up; he's knocked the wind out of me. Then Percy kneels down beside me and puts his arm against my neck.
"I win," he says. Then he stands up, dusts himself off, and walks away. Annabeth doesn't even check if I'm okay, she just walks beside Percy.
Percy Jackson. What a jerk.
