Solid Ground

Her eyes were grass
growing among the dirt.
The people called it hazel
but he called it solid ground.
Her lips were thin.
Not admirable,
but there was something about the smile they could form.
Her face had curves her body did not.
He admired it for what it was.
For the truth within the wrinkles beside her eyes.
This girl, this woman
She had a sharp mind,
one that most men would try to dominate for power.
He did not want that of her.
To him,
her mind was a complexity full of knowledge that a dominant man would not understand
And this mind made her beautiful.
It was she
that showed him the difference between being brave
and being proud.
For indeed,that's what he was:
A proud man.
But since the first moment he caught a glimpse of solid ground,
of a grin that made the world turn,
of a face that fit perfectly in his hands,
of a body that wasn't standard
but belonged to a mind that was worth taking a second or fifth look.
Since the first glimpse of her,
he dropped his pride
and the need to dominate
and he ignored the men saying "nothing's worth a woman who thinks".
He knew from that second,
Everything was worth
this woman who thinks.
