**3rd person POV**
As soon as Jack, Friendly and Light entered the cavern, Light immediately shifted into her half wolf, half human form and flew straight into Varil's arms, causing hem both to collapse on the ground in a fit of giggles.
Friendly chuckled and leaned into Jack as he wrapped a protective arm around her waist. River eventually tore his eyes away from the adorable pair before him and looked up at Jack and Friendly.
"So, is it good news or bad news?" He asked, referring to the talker they recently interrogated.
Friendly frowned and Jack shook his head. "Sorry, buddy. It's bad news. We got nothing out of him but insults." Jack shrugged.
River sighed and nodded in understanding. "Oh well. Maybe next time." He shrugs, repeating exactly what he had said every single time they come back with nothing.
"Oh, they're back!" A melodic voice chirped, followed by a very familiar humming sound. Friendly gave Tooth a small smile as she fluttered up to her. Her wings didn't flutter as fast and gracefully as they used to. They often paused for about half a second and they even sometimes paused for a few seconds, causing Tooth to fall but quickly pick herself up. Her feathers weren't as bright and vibrant as they used to be, but her voice said otherwise. She always tired to keep everyone in a good mood.
"Hey, Tooth. Any news on our believers?" Friendly asks.
"Not too bad. Bunny's been lending me a hand this week and it helped the lights shine much brighter." She beamed. Then she thinks for a second and her expression softens. "Though it would do a huge number if you sang to them like you used to..." She adds carefully.
Friendly's smile quickly faded as she moved her gaze to the floor. Jack's grip on her waist tightened as he pecked his lips to her head in reassurance. It seemed like everyone had gone quiet and was listening for Friendly's reaction. She eventually nodded after a long pause, but it was only a nod of agreement.
"I know." She looked up at Tooth with an unconvincing smile. "But I...I'm sorry, Tooth. I just..." She takes a deep breath before slowly shaking her head. "I can't."
Tooth's wings paused for about a second before she quickly picked herself up with a sad sigh. "I understand." She gives them both a quick smile and flutters away, her shoulders sagging. Everybody seemed to be going back to doing whatever it was they were doing with quiet remarks of disappointment. River walked away with Varil and Light trailing behind them. Light looked over her shoulder and gave friendly an understanding, but disappointed look before resting her head on Varil's shoulder.
Friendly closes her eyes as she lets out a long, sad sigh. Jack brushes a strand of hair out of her eyes and tucks it behind her ear. "I'm a failure..." She whispers.
"No you're not-"
"I am, Jack. You saw how disappointed she looked! I hate it when I have to turn her down like that."
Jack cups her face and rubs his thumb along her cheekbone. "It's okay. She understands. We all do. You just need time, that's all. We'll figure this out together, alright?"
Friendly sighs and nods before leaning into his chest, wrapping her arms around his neck and his around her waist in a tight embrace.
"Sometimes I wonder if we'll ever get out of this mess. If things will go back to the way they were..." Jack mumbles into her hair. "Sometimes I wonder if any of us will go back to the way we were. Do you...do you think we will?" His voice cracks.
"In time. Once this is all over, I believe we'll go back to the way we once were after a while. Some of us may remain changed forever. But I believe that some will return back to their normal selves." Friendly sighs into his chest.
"Do you think we will remain changed forever...?" Jack whispers.
There was a long pause before Friendly answered. "I don't think anyone would give us a choice." She smiles.
Jack smiles at the humour in her voice, but a small part of him is unconvinced. He yearned to hear Friendly sing again. Everyone did.
But she was broken. So broken, she lost the will to sing. Over time, she believed that she had just lost the ability to sing. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't bring herself to do it. Jack promised her and himself that he would fix her. He would do whatever it takes to bring that beautiful glow back into her steely eyes.
The beautiful shimmer that sparkled in her eyes within Light's presence wasn't as vibrant as before. In fact, it made her look scary and intimidating. Her white skin was decorated with ugly grey scars that had developed over time. On her right upper arm was the Shadow Hunter's mark, just like everyone else's, only it had a long, grey scar slicing straight through it.
"Jack? You okay?" Friendly suddenly asked, concern in her tone.
Jack shook his head, realising that he had just been staring at her for quite some time. "Y-yeah. I'm fine." He smiled.
Friendly tilted her head, unconvinced. She slowly raised her small hand and rested it on his cheek, swiping her thumb below his eye to catch a stray tear that had escaped. As she opened her mouth to say something, her face suddenly contorted into pain and she doubled over, holding her head.
Jack quickly knelt in front of her, caressing her cheeks with both his hands. "Friendly? Baby, are you okay? What's wrong?" He rushes, pausing before stating his assumption. "Is it happening again?"
Friendly harshly nods and attempts to stand upright only to fall to her knees again. Jack turns his head towards the direction Light and Varil were standing in each other's arms, similar to how Jack and Friendly were previously standing. "Light! Get over here! NOW!"
Light's head immediately darted to face them and as soon as she saw Friendly doubled over in pain, she mumbled a quick apology to Varil and rushed up to them. Jack scoops Friendly up bridal style and Light grips his arm to phase them through the ceiling as they fly up and away at lightning speed.
**Wynter POV**
I pulled up my hood as I stepped out into the cold air, the fur tickling my face. I carefully pulled the door closed, being as quiet as possible. As soon as it clicked shut I tip-toed down the patio and dashed into the street. My boots sunk deeply into the white blanket of snow beneath me, gentle snowflakes falling from the dark sky, sticking to the fur on my hood.
I could see my breath as I jogged into the forest, looking behind me a few times to see if anyone at home had stirred, but from my view, the house was still as quiet as I left it. I slowed down my pace a little when I was further into the forest and gradually slowed down to walking pace as I came to a familiar area.
I spun around a few times, searching the area before rushing up to a familiar tree and pulling out a handcrafted spear that I had hidden. I brushed off a few flecks of frost that had gathered up on it before gripping the handle and dashing further into the forest.
I wandered around in the forest for almost an hour. It was now pitch black and I was shining my small torch around in search for something, sometimes waving it around frantically for some kind of response but to no avail.
However, my search was over when something black rushed past. I immediately started dashing after it, as fast as my feet could carry me.
When I decreased quite some distance on it, I tossed my spear and smirked triumphantly when it grazed it's side, getting it's attention. It turned to face me, blood red eyes glaring down at me, razor sharp teeth glistening in the moonlight.
I spread my feet apart and took my stance, waiting for it to strike and when it did, I dodged to the side and dashed past it, towards my spear that was laying in the snow.
As soon as I reached it, I swung it at the black beast that was chasing me. I managed to strike just above it's left eye, which angered it more than it already was. I began dodging and skidding out of the way as its claws began to thrash down at me.
At one time, its claw thrashed down from directly above me and I blocked it with my spear. I grunted as I struggled to keep myself standing as the claw pushed down at me.
When I finally managed to beat its strength and rise up, I didn't notice its other claw thrash at me from the side. With such a force, the air was knocked out of my lungs as I harshly landed on the snow-covered ground. I quickly examined my side to make sure there wasn't any critical damage, but luckily for me, there wasn't any blood or noticeable bones sticking in the wrong place.
I pushed myself up to my feet and looked up to see my spear on the ground, right beneath the beast. It bared its razor sharp teeth and began to stalk towards me, stepping on my spear and breaking it in half. I squeaked at the loss of my spear but my attention was quickly turned back to the beast as it stalked closer.
I began taking steps backwards, my hands shaking, my bottom lip between my teeth.
I messed up. I messed up bad.
I quickly reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my final option: a white dagger. I gulped and held it in front of me in a defensive stance. When my back hit the tree trunk, I knew this was it. My eyes widened in fear as the beast's shoulders hunched back and took in a deep breath.
It suddenly screeched right in my face, a deafening sound like nails on a chalkboard that made my head spin. In the sudden shock and slowly building fear, I let out a shrill shriek myself.
When it finally stopped screeching, it raised its claw and I closed my eyes, waiting for the strike. But it never came.
I heard a loud thump which made me open my eyes immediately. I gasped in shock when I saw the beast had been thrust away from me, into the snow. Then suddenly, a figure landed in front of me. Long, white flowing hair, white skin, white double blade in hand and the recognisable 'S' logo on her right upper arm.
The beast was now back on its feet and began to charge at us. The Shadow Hunter spun her white blade and charged forward at the beast, striking it three times, not missing once. After just three strikes, the beast was on its back again, but quickly regained its balance and charged again. The Shadow Hunter blocked its attacks with ease, spinning the blade effortlessly from hand to hand.
Suddenly, a wave of ice suddenly shot up the beast's back, causing it to shriek and hastily try to shake it off. Talk about a chill running down your spine.
As soon as the ice began to break off, something else slashed at it's face causing it to shriek in pain. A boy with white hair gripping a white sword in one hand and a wooden stick in the resemblance of a Shepard's crook in the other suddenly lands next to it and waves the wooden staff. A gust of wind and snow rushed past and immediately knocked the beast onto its back.
The next few things happened extremely quick.
The girl thrust her arm forward and white chains darted up from the ground which bound the beast to the ground. Then she caught the beast's claws in the gap of one of her blades and spun the sword, slicing them off. The beast screeched as they began to drop but was quickly silenced when the boy used his sword to hit the black spikes. They thrust into the beast's face and neck like darts, causing its screech to stop cold.
Then the girl thrust her white blade into the ground and began to control the white chains by waving her arms. They tightened around the beast, particularly around its neck which began to still its movements. Then she nodded at the boy and he thrust his white sword into the beast's side before dragging it along and pulling out.
As soon as the beast disappeared I couldn't stop the word escaping my mouth. "Wooow..."
They both suddenly turned to face me, their eyes dark and steely. It didn't take long for me to realise that they were glaring at me.
I gasped when a giant white wolf, twice my size landed in front of me and began growling. I whimpered and took a few steps back, hand held out in defence but the wolf was gently pulled back by the girl. The glare never left her face and soon the boy appeared at her side with the same look.
I hung my head in shame and began to twiddle my thumbs. I was about to say something before Friendly's words in a harsh, seething tone made me jump.
"Wynter Nightingale."
I gulped at the use of my full name. I slowly looked up, giving them my best puppy dog eyes.
"Heheh...hey, guys..." I croaked.
The corners of Jack's lips turned down into a frown as he folded his arms. Friendly gave Light a look before tossing something at me. I clumsily caught it and noticed it as the top end of my broken spear. I looked up at her before she spoke again in a slightly softer tone.
"You are in big trouble young man."
"Aw crap..."
