She stood on the side of the road, snow falling heavy on her shoulders. She wiped some of it away from her face and watching the curve intently, patiently waiting. She heard the noise she had been waiting for swelling as a black SUV rounded the bend in the road. She rocked back and forth on the edge of the curb, tempting fate. Gingerly, she took a step back as the vehicle raced past her. She released a deep breath she didn’t realize she had been holding and shook her head. The snow that had collected on her red knit cap cascaded down her back and onto the ground. She waited for the noise again. A few minutes later, she could hear the roar of a pick-up truck. She looked both ways before stepping into the middle of the road, turning away from the quickly approaching vehicle. She closed her eyes and exhaled deeply, the sound of a horn echoing in her ears.
