==========
Jingyu stared at the perfection that was Weizhou. Taking centerstage at the Top Chinese Music Award show they were both invited to. This is definitely Weizhou's night. And Jingyu could only feel thankful to have been there to watch it unfold.
He flashes back to the memory of them singing with Zhouzhou playing his guitar. Of the songs Zhouzhou penned for Shangyin. Which included Dust, which he now sang with sweet and poignant emotions on the big stage.
Half a year ago, this would have seemed impossible to a boy starting on a career in the entertainment industry, armed only with sheer talent and an enthusiasm that helped pull Jingyu out of his shell and enabled him to give the performance of his life as Gu Hai.
Everything had rolled big from there. And for Jingyu, who already thinks the world of Weizhou, feels that Weizhou had just become larger than life, technically having his big debut in the big stage. The album has yet to be released but each song painstakingly made has already made the rounds of the internet and fans have said it matched the mood of the series.
But for Jingyu who saw the process, it was the mark of the kind of talent this man has, and the dedication he put into his work, great or small. It sometimes embarrasses Jingyu to feel like he had it easy whatever came his way, but Weizhou, he always put forth a 110%.
Nobody deserved it more than he did, his time onstage, entrancing Jingyu and the rest who watched with that raw yet soothing voice, easily trilling each note and wave of melody of the oddly melancholic but hopeful song. A beautiful man singing with heart more than technique, easily foreseeable that he could be greater with more experience.
He surged to his feet, along with the crowd, when Weizhou was done with his song, those smiling eyes unable to contain the happiness and excitement as Weizhou's wide smile and high cheekbones rendered him chinky eyed as he bowed and took in the applause. Jingyu felt proud and happy for Weizhou.
It would have taken Jingyu awhile to recover himself if he didn't get a message from Vivi-jie, he saw on his phone screen notification when he looked at it in an effort to distract himself while Weizhou made his way backstage. He stared at the back of his manager's head where she sat on the front seats near the exit, along with other managers. She had never bothered him during an event.
"You should have seen your face on the monitor. The internet's going on fire right now about how the 'husband' looked so proud of 'wifey'" was the message.
Jingyu felt his face go up in flames - partly embarrassed, partly chagrined. His foremost thought was that his reactions shouldn't overshadow what Weizhou had achieved on that stage. On top of the speculations around why he and Zhouzhou aren't even seen to be together in this event. He wanted to remind them that it's a music award show, and that Zhouzhou's the singer, not him. Their show together, or their couple pairing status together shouldn't even have a place here. Except for Weizhou and the song he sang and composed.
He only managed to school his features, a pleasantly happy look that was furthest from the roil of emotions inside him. If people had seen him looking proud of Weizhou, he wasn't going to do any damage by suddenly looking troubled. He will properly enjoy the night so it wouldn't look like he was biased for Weizhou.
He knew he shouldn't have come.
He nearly frowned when his phone lit up with a call from his manager.
"Get backstage." was her clipped order. Jingyu realized she wasn't in her seat anymore. "Floor director's in an emergency - they need someone to present an award."
He made his excuses as soon as he ascertained that no camera was taking a shot of him, and headed backstage.
Backstage was a bedlam. His sharp eyes easily picked out Weizhou from the crowd, already dressed back in his blue carpet suit and presumably heading back to his seat. Jingyu acted as if he didn't see Zhouzhou, the angle of his neck visibly attuned to his manager explaining the situation. She already had ok from the company, for Jingyu to present one of the awards.
"Wait, wait," he interjected, realizing which award he was to present. "I can't be the presenter for that - I'm a newbie, popularity notwithstanding. Won't the audience and the recipient going to be offended? I'll present one of the lesser awards - move someone around and let the most appropriate person present this."
He half watched the going-ons infront of him, and half-felt Weizhou's presence behind him. Floor director's eyes took on a speculative gleam.
He heard Weizhou laugh behind him, so he had no choice but to turn around and acknowledge the other guy's presence. The smile in his eyes was still there, though Weizhou had a teasing look for the floor director.
"Don't look at me gege. I already sang, and for me to present an award to a singer is going to smell like a neophyte culling favors. Jingyu's your best bet, and I think his judgment call is sound. You need to move people around and have Jingyu present one of the lesser awards."
Floor director just threw up his hands. " What's with both your penchant to do damage prevention? Gosh, but you're right. Will it be ok for you to wait here, Jingyu? Next award's in fifteen minutes, you'll present that if I manage to move someone up. I'll be back."
Jingyu would have preferred it if his manager didn't just sidle away, offering Zhouzhou brief congratulations before blatantly pretending to give them privacy. Suddenly, it was just him and Zhouzhou.
"You were great out there," Jingyu said, confused as to why he'd feel shy when congratulations are in order.
Weizhou raised an eyebrow. "Just 'great'? After you set the Internet on fire with how 'proud' you were of your 'wife'?" Zhouzhou teased.
Jingyu's jaw dropped. Like how the hell would Zhouzhou find out about it so soon? But whatever it was he was going to say just flew right out of the window because Zhouzhou was suddenly shaking his shoulders with excitement.
"Oh gosh, I can't believe it happened! I mean, I wasn't dreaming, was I?!"
Jingyu found it cute, how Zhouzhou's expression of disbelief clashed with his obvious happiness. Though it suddenly dimmed a bit when Zhouzhou started to worry.
"Did I do alright? I mean, tell me honestly, did I suck? I had trouble with the mic and the earphones a bit, and some of the loud sounds distracted me, so maybe I slipped, or something, I or..."
Jingyu was the one who shook Zhouzhou this time. "Relax Weizhou, you were spectacular! You wouldn't have gotten that standing ovation if you weren't. And if you did suck, you'd have heard it first from me." He teased Zhouzhou.
It only made Zhouzhou bubble over with laughter. "Actually," Zhouzhou managed to start in between wheezes, "I wouldn't have made it if I wasn't desperately thinking I shouldn't botch this performance, or you wouldn't let me hear the end of it." Zhouzhou laughed again.
Jingyu scowled, mildly offended that he motivated Zhouzhou only as the stick. Zhouzhou laughed again seeing his face.
"Ahaha, don't pout, it's the truth." Zhouzhou wiped the tears from his eyes. Jingyu thinks the other guy is having too much fun at his expense.
"Come on, let's take a pic together, or the YuZhou fans are not going to stop asking why we don't have one when we're in the same event."
Jingyu was still not in the mood so their first pic had him with a put-upon expression while Zhouzhou smiled brightly. Second pic looked like Zhouzhou was coaxing him to smile. Only the next pics had Jingyu smiling brightly, finally deciding he shouldn't be morose on what is Weizhou's night.
And Weizhou just took the Internet down when he posted their pics with all three kinds of Jingyu faces and the caption "Hubby's face when I told him backstage that I did good with the opening number just because I didn't want him to tease me for a job done bad <cat face>".
