My body held against his rose and fell with his ragged breaths. Alpha, more of a panther then human, crouched low, alert. His muscular legs were tightly sprung ready to pounce. I waited for Spike to break the silence with a threat or maybe some evil cackle but he did something even worse, he remained silent. In that silence was a promise of much more horrifying then words could explain. We all knew Alpha had a choice, surrender and we would die together or fight and be partially responsible for my consequent murder. I pleaded with him to help. If that meant fighting or dropping his weapons I couldn't decide. The knife pressed harder against the skin on my throat, a warning, reminder. My heart beat so quick it seemed to merge together in my chest like it had stopped. Then there was darkness.
Alpha disappeared in the blinding black of the corridor and Spike growled under his breath contemplating keeping me alive. His hand twitched. There was no movement I could make that wouldn't trigger him to slash open my neck. I knew he had the authority to do such. Suddenly his arms disappeared from me, a series of grunts followed somewhere to my left. I silently thanked Twist for his computer skills knowing without a doubt he was the cause for the power cut. Blind I waited, praying for Alpha to win the ghostly fight, there was a frosty silence.
"Alpha?" I whispered cautiously holding my painful neck with out hand.
No response.
My heart spiked in to a sprinting pace as I waited for a sign, light. The later complied as light flooded the halls, first I noticed a syringe resting on the floor by my feet and then I saw Alpha clutching at his chest, his face blooded. Spike lay unconscious on the floor his legs twisted at a awkward angles. Not wasting a moment I rushed forwards plunging the syringe in to his neck then inspecting Alphas injuries. A deep lash on his eyebrow poured blood in to his eyes. He tried to wipe away the blood reaching down to wipe his hands on the carpet. I caught his wrist quickly.
"Blood tests." Was all I said, knowing even a drop of evidence could lead back to us. He nodded and rose slowly to his feet flinching and holding his ribs gently. I attempted to help him but he simply shrugged me off. We both shared simple glances all the way back to where Twist was. The adrenalin in my body started to fade away like a heavy mist that once numbed my senses. I began to feel the slap on my cheek, the tightness of my shoulders where spike had held me. It had been too close tonight.****
Water ran in fat drops down my back and through my hair if I closed my eyes I could almost imagine the smell of wet pavements as the fresh rain soaked my body on earth. The shower water changed from warm to a soldering hot and instead my mind took me back to when the sky was on fire pieces of debris from explosions rained down and a part of me knew, it was all my fault...
My mind kept going back to the fact they had found the new earth, Renata. The mere thought of it had a sensation of joy and relief rushing though me, but to be able to evolve so fast and testing on kids. I wanted to scream at how unfair it was, also what about the others on the ship that couldn't do the same? Although I had just showered I began sweating again while quickly changing in to my clothes. How much was a nation willing to sacrifice for the survival of the human race.
I hardly payed attention to Rusty as he began to start the History lesson about World War Two, a boy with black slick hair and blue eyes slid in to the seat beside me.
"My names Blade." He held out a hand to shake.
"And mine's 'not interested' I responded, his flirtatious smile making my bad mood even worse. His hand lowered.
"Alright tiger." He smirked still. I wanted to bury my head in my books, admittedly he was good looking and if head approached me two weeks ago before all this drama occurred I would have been stumbling over my tongue to get to know him. Also I couldn't help the feeling of guilt like I was involuntary cheating on someone.
"So I'm guessing now your Alphas play thing your unavailable?" He says smoothly raising his eyebrows. My mouth dropped open in disgust then I remember what he said the first time we went in to the toilets. Although it wasn't what we were doing he wanted others to think it for our safety. I wanted to groan and slam my head against the desk but simply nodded, jaw tight.
"Shame." Blade muttered. He luckily didn't make anymore attempts to talk to me the rest of the lesson.
Walking to lunch through the tedious grey corridors I caught up with Twist and Raven. Twist gave me a knowing glance and I looked straight ahead not wanting a questioning Raven.
"I saw Blade taking to you in History." She sang nudging my shoulder suggestively.
"Yeah, that guys a douche though." I replied.
"But a hot one."
I rolled my eyes. Placing a can of honey leaves on my tray I went to sit down my eyes scanning the crowds for people I recognised. The tables for lunch were separated in to age groups, at the far corner of the room I recognised a mess of dark hair, a bruise on his chin had started to form and the cut on his eyebrow was now sowed up. He locked eyes with me gesturing me over, I looked back to Twist and Raven but they were both preoccupied with each other flicking water back and forth."We need to do something." His inky midnight black eyes absorbed my thoughts.
"Agreed"
"There's no point forming a revolution because that would cause more deaths, plus we also don't know who's in on the secret.." He whispered, aware of people around us.
"But we also can't do this by ourselves. They can silence us and make others forget. It makes me wonder if people have been in the same position as us before." My voice trailed off. "Maybe we could destroy the chemicals they give us that wipes our memories."
"And cause national chaos." He murmured. I closed my eyes and breathed out deeply, everything seemed so wrong. Fighting against what was wrong didn't even seem so called 'right.' But then again what is morally wrong and right? How could someone decide and what factors play in to it: the innocence or vulnerability of a person, age? My heart seemed to twitch somewhere deep inside of me and I felt a tight pinch in my throat. None of this was meant to happen to us, we were supposed to be young, naive teenagers drinking too much and experiencing independent life for the first time.
Suddenly my trembling hand was enveloped by another's, warm, comforting. I looked up to Alpha the man who had been transformed, or in my eyes had. From a merciless beast to someone who for the second time was willing to shred his walls to let me in.
