Somewhere within the city, Night slept soundly for the first time since leaving the Vault three days prior. Exhaustion and sorrow had driven him to take shelter behind an old dumpster. On his way to Diamond City, he had encountered a drug dealer outside a little diner just outside of Concord, where the owner's son owed the dealers money. He had helped settle it by killing the dealers after they had attacked him, and the woman - Trudy - had thanked him by giving him some warmer clothes to wear, as well as pointing him in the direction of this infamous Diamond City. He'd encountered many new enemies and dangers as he made his way into the city limits, but Dogmeat had helped make sure he made it out without much more than a scratch. He had a rather deep cut across his cheek, that intersected with the already-existing scar that ran down his right eye, but it wasn't anything drastic.
After collapsing where he was, no idea how far Diamond City was, he was shaken awake by a man dressed in what appeared to be armor made from baseball attire with padding, with a white logo painted on the chest in the shape of a diamond. The man wore a protective baseball helmet, and as well as the holstered 10mm pistol Night saw at his side, he was holding a baseball bat with nails stuck through it, obviously using it as a makeshift weapon.
"Hey, what're you doin'? You can't sleep here!" the man yelled in a thick Bostonian accent.
"Who are you?" Night muttered, standing after he stopped Dogmeat from barking at the man.
As he became more aware, he realized there were several other men with him, all dressed the same, armed with modified baseball bats and various guns. Night blinked, slightly confused.
"Are you stupid or somethin'? We're Diamond City security. And you're dead if you stay out here much longer."
The air around them was freezing, a chill set deep into Night's bones, and the late night fog was creeping through the streets. Everyone's breath hung in the air for a few seconds as its own fog, before dissipating into the cool breeze. One thing the man had said stuck in Night's mind, forcing further questions.
"Did you say Diamond City?"
"Yeah! What, you never been to Diamond City before? It's the old baseball stadium. Most secure settlement in the entire Commonwealth."
"How do I get there?"
"You can come with us, we're headed back right now."
For about ten minutes, Night followed the guards into the city, which was surprisingly peaceful considering they had just explained he would have died had he remained out there much longer. Eventually they came to a set of wooden barricades, that were heavily guarded by patrolling men and turrets, and inside was the gate to the stadium, with the huge words above it: "Diamond City".
Finally, he had made it, and it was now his next step to finding Shaun. He quickly thanked the guards for the escort, before stepping inside the barricades. He was in awe of how well the stadium he had been to so many times pre-war had withstood the bombs. It was still solid, hence why they said it was the "safest settlement in the Commonwealth". The door was closed, however - a huge, mechanized gate that would be enough to keep out any intruder or wild creature who wandered too close.
Once the awe wore off a little, he began to notice a high pitched voice yelling into the intercom by the gate, and he blinked a few times. There was a woman, dressed in a red leather trench coat, a pear of torn jeans and boots, a scarf around her neck and a newsboy cap on her shoulder-length inky black hair. She was yelling at someone on the other side, and Night was unsure whether to step back or attempt to talk to her.
"Come on, Danny! I LIVE here!"
"I'm sorry, Piper," the male voice on the other side was vaguely audible at the distance Night was standing, "but Mayor McDonough has strictly told me not to let you in.. I'm only following orders."
