She walked into the massive building, her heart thumping in her ears. She went up to the front desk and said in a barely audible whisper. "Flat 204, Amber Kuhl," however the porter seemed to recognize her, as she was ushered into the lift on the left and left to find her way in the endless corridors.
204
The door was exactly the same as every other door, the only difference was that this one had the mortal number on it, "Here goes nothing," she said to herself, before knocking loudly on the door. The door was opened barely a second later, and Amber cowered back in fear, "Muuuum!" A boy with dark skin called out, "She's here!"
"No need to be so rude," a woman, presumably the boy's mother, called back, not nearly as loudly as her son. The boy seemed to be back in working order, and soon continued with his talking,
"I'm Frankie, the woman that you just heard was my mum, my dad is at work right now, come on in." Amber followed the boy through the narrow doorway with all of her bags. "That's your room, don't worry we can decorate it later," the room was very boring and not at all like she wanted it, it had ugly walls and the bed had a simple, brown duvet that just didn't fit with Amber's personality. "Thanks, can I unpack on my own?"
"Sure, call me if you need anything." Amber started unpacking placing most of her things into a cupboard and just about finding a place for her safe box, which in the end hadn't been left at Tellare, right under the desk. She placed her laptop and small modem and other things on her desk, she placed some manuscripts of her newest books (which she never thought were going to be published, but she didn't care) on the bedside table, and left her large Holo-Make on her bedside table as well, although it looked completely normal to anybody that saw it there. "Done," Amber said to herself, pleased that she had accomplished this much just after her life seemed to have turned upside down. She slipped out of the room and went looking for food, the silence in the room was eerie to her, and she almost didn't notice the two people sitting on the white leather couch. One was reading a newspaper The Daily Puzzle, and another was reading a book titled War of The Body, Peace of The Mind. Amber thought she would do well to remember that, as just because she was now miles away from any care home she couldn't stop doing her duties. Ever.
Without even realizing it, Amber had located the Coco Puffs in the kitchen cupboard and was now on a highly successful mission to look for some almond milk (she was highly allergic to lactose.) She found some almond milk and started pouring herself some before a voice that came from behind her scared her out of her skin. "And what might you be doing there, taking my mum's milk without her permission," the same boy that had answered the door for her said straight into her ear. Shocked, Amber dropped the milk and whipped around, side-glaring at the boy with a look fit to kill.
"I'm allergic to lactose, you numbskull," Amber said those last to words quite quietly, but nothing seemed to be getting past that boy,
"I heard you."
"Well what a surprise that is, eh." Retorted Amber, somewhat sarcastically,
"Oh, okay sorry, it's just my mum doesn't like her almond milk to be messed with."
"Totally," Amber said, this time with venom laced into her voice. The boy seemed to take a step back, and she stopped glaring daggers at the boy long enough to eat her cereal. "Oh and by the way, we've got school tomorrow." The way that the boy said this, completely casually, shook Amber the most.
"I just broke up,"
"Not if you live in London you haven't, we've still got two weeks left, feel blessed that at least you don't have to wear a uniform, special permission, you'll have to wear one at the start of year nine," Amber made an 'o' with her mouth, and realizing that she had no more Coco Puffs left, resigned herself to her room, getting ready for bed.
