There were people all over the place. The freshmen were easy to pick out in the crowd because they tended to hug the walls a lot, and often looked confused regarding where they should be. They looked at their paper which had their schedule printed on it as if it were a map. Olivia always helped the ones who looked plum lost. She knew how frightening it was to go from a middle school environment to a monstrous high school that had quadruple the amount of students.

“Hey ya’ll! I can’t even wrap my head around the fact that this is our last year! I cried about it last night, I’m not gonna lie. What are ya’ll up to?” Hannah King could be heard a mile away. That girl was as loud and obnoxious as it gets but everyone adored her. She was a chatter box, but she was as sweet as could be.

“Hey Hannah! I missed you the last few weeks! How was Alabama with the folks?” Olivia asked.

“Oh my goodness, it was torturous, let me tell you. I mean, I did love seein’ all my family and whatnot but I missed ya’ll so much! I had to ride the bus this mornin’ too. My stupid brakes went out! But I’m not gonna complain. Let’s do this.”

Olivia, Hannah and Kenley walked the halls that they were all too familiar with and parted ways when it came time to depart to their first classes. Olivia’s first class was study hall. She laughed at the thought of it but she had completed a good portion of her credits already so she didn’t quite need to take any more classes. She had another study hall for eighth period. Why did I not bring a book? She wondered a handful of times. She passed the time writing in her journal, which she did a lot. She wrote a lot about her ambitions and dreams and where she wanted to be in five years, ten years, etcetera.

She didn’t have the future mapped out just yet, but she knew once she finished school she was going to New York. Period. She would move away from Georgia and never look back. She wanted to be as independent as possible. The lights of the city drew her in, the culture, the skyscrapers, everything. That would be her home. The thought of it often sent butterflies fluttering through her stomach.

Daydreaming helped pass the time in study hall as she knew it would. She didn’t bother meeting back up with Kenley for second period Journalism since it was just up the stairs and to the right of where the study hall room was. She walked in, and found Kenley already sitting at a desk next to Trevor Cadelle and Elliot Burke. Trevor and Elliot were easily considered Olivia’s best friends, aside from Kenley. Kenley was more like a sister than a friend. There was never a dull moment with the four of them together and Olivia was instantly thrilled that they were all sharing the same class.

“How awesome is it that we’re all in the same freakin’ class?” Olivia yelled from the doorway. She took a seat directly in front of Trevor. “Look ya’ll, I don’t know if you’ve heard but I’m kind of a genius so don’t go gettin’ me side tracked. I’m here to learn, not socialize.”

Trevor probably knew the most about Olivia, and from the first day she met him in the third grade, she felt comfortable around him. She trusted him whole-heartedly and he never let her down. “Genius? Girl, I think your ego grows a little more every time I look at you.” Olivia laughed and stood up, as did Trevor and they hugged.

They small talked for a couple of minutes about the new students and what their plans were going to be after school. Rarely did a day pass where the four of them were not together. The deafening bell let out a loud ring as the last of the students shuffled through the door to find a seat. Olivia turned and faced forward, opening her unused five subject notebook. The heavy classroom door clicked shut and Olivia looked up. What the hell? Her mind was running a million miles an hour. Nick Cereno? Is he a student? No freaking way is he the Journalism teacher. She felt her face get hot , knowing she was blushing.
