Olivia sat down on the edge of the bed and started crying. Nick sat next to her to try to calm her down but nothing he could say would make her feel any better.

“Shit, Nick. What about college? I just graduated high school yesterday. I don’t know how to be a mother! Shit.”

“Darlin’ it’s gonna be okay.”

“No it’s not! We were stupid and careless and, God . . . what are we gonna do?”

            Nick squeezed her hand gently.

“You’re still goin’ to college. Look at the positive side of it. We have the time, we have the space, we have the funds, right?”

“I guess but—“

“No, no buts. You’ve got a man right here beside you to help you through anything you need. I know you probably don’t wanna hear this but . . . I’m pretty excited.”

“Excited? Of course you’re excited. You’ve already went to school and got a degree. Not me. All my dreams and hopes for the future. They’re dead.”

“Stop it. Now. All of your dreams and hopes for the future are still very much in tact. The only difference is you’re gonna have somebody callin’ you momma.”

“Momma,” Olivia echoed to herself as she wiped away at the tears stinging her eyes.

“We were gonna start a family anyway. Sure, not anytime soon, but this is God’s doin’. Maybe God and your Daddy had this planned. Everything happens for a reason, darlin’. Now, I’m hopin’ that maybe you still wanna marry me, despite what’s goin’ on in your head right now.”

“That’ll never change. That’s what we’re here for. I want to be your wife, Nick.”

“And I want to be your husband. Come here, babe.”

Olivia laid in Nick’s arms and he stroked her hair until she cried herself to sleep. Nick lay silently staring at Olivia’s beautiful face, wondering how he had become so lucky. Their relationship blossomed from student and teacher, to flirtation, to lust, to love, to marriage and a family. He knew they wanted to wait before trying to have children but what was done was done and there was no looking back. There was only looking forward. And the future looked bright.
