Revelation
Morning had just begun to dawn. The light had just pierced the gloomy looking forest overhead. In a sick and twisted sort of way, it was kind of beautiful I guess…
Adrenaline coursed through my veins as I slowly drew back the string of my compound bow. I tried my best to be silent and control my breathing, lest I throw off my aim, or worse… alert my target to my presence. I could feel my heart pounding as a bead of sweat rolled down my forehead. Carefully I let the string slide off my fingertips. The string made a sweet TWANG! as the arrow was sent darting gracefully towards its mark.
I watched closely in anticipation, hoping that the arrow would hit where I intended. Normally I’m not this concerned… I’m a pretty good shot. But normally I don’t try to shoot from this distance either. Not to mention that if I missed, it could easily cost me my life. The arrow was only in the air for a few seconds, but it felt like eternity to me.
A slight smile crept upon my lips as I saw the arrow lodge itself halfway through the back of the skull of my target. He fell lifelessly to the ground.
Silent, and clean. I thought to myself, not daring to speak.
Slowly, and quietly I began to make my way over to where the body had fallen, hoping he’d might have been carrying something useful, and if nothing else, retrieve my arrow.
I placed my black leather military boot on the corpse’s face, gripping the arrow with my hands. With a slight tug I pulled the arrow free from his head. I reached into my pants pocket, pulling out a dark cloth with which I wiped the arrow clean of blood and other residue.
The man had bright blonde hair and his eyes were light blue, so light blue they were almost haunting. I reached forward closing his eyes, putting my mind at ease. His cloths were tattered, torn, slashed, and moldy. His flesh was a pale white color, he had obviously been dead for a while…
I secured the arrow into a sack, which hung from a long belt around my chest, full of other arrows just like it. The large bundle of arrows sat just behind my lower back. Now it was time to check the body. I knelt down and began to check for anything that could be useful. Most of his pockets were worn through, and completely bare. Pocket after pocket I turned up empty, until at last!
A lighter! I thought to myself, that might come in handy.
I placed the lighter securely in my chest pocket, then I went back to searching the body. A moment later I reached into his back pocket, pulling out a wallet. I opened the wallet. The first thing I saw was his driver’s license.
James Fetts… Not anymore… I shrugged in a dark sense of humour.
Opening another flap of the wallet reviled a long strip of pictures. The pictures were filled with three different faces, all children, all smiling and bright. They all had blonde hair and light blue eyes just like James. I assumed these must have been his kids. One picture however, was of a woman with dark chestnut color hair; her eyes were the most beautiful green I’d ever seen before. Though here hair and eyes were completely different form the children, her facial structure was very similar. I guessed that was his wife and the mother of his children.
I gazed at the picture for a moment, completely entranced by her beauty, and the illusion of this family I had created. I had no way of knowing if they were really a family… but somehow making these things up and believing them gave me some sense of warmth and pleasure perhaps because it reminded me of before…
I stood up from the ground, dusting myself off. I had been in one place for too long; it was time to get moving. I folded up the wallet, placing into my chest pocket alongside the lighter. I trotted off alone into the forest, being as silent as possible. I miss my life… I miss my family. I wasn’t built for this world, not the way it is now.
