Prologue
Here in the country of Galex, we are subject to adhere to the King and Queen. We must pay tariffs, and abide the laws. Don't get me wrong, we're not an antique monarchy with irrelevant punishments to those who are loathed. We are a modern-day government that incorporates a few aspects of a monarchy.
King John, for example. He's thirty two, and has ruled since he was a "dapper at fourteen" quoted my grandma.
Queen Amelia; she's a generous person at heart, I just love her. There's always a big smile on her face.
Prince Caleb. He's quite the lady's man. Inheriting his father's looks and his mother's heart, he would make a good candidate for a husband.
Which brings me to this piece of information you should really know...I have been going out with Caleb for FOUR YEARS now, since I was in ninth grade. Now, we're both eighteen, and Caleb needs to marry within his eighteenth year of life in order to rule one day.
This averts two problems, one, who would he marry? Me? I want to go to college and get a career and most importantly NOT be famous. Caleb and mine's relationship status has gone unseen for four years now. The paparazzi have NO CLUE that I am tied to this wonderful person. They've been trying to find me, but those bodyguards are good.
So let me explain everything up until this point in time. Caleb and I met at a summer camp in the USA. After we booth realized we lived within half an hour of each other, (I really DO live 30 minutes from the palace) we decided to "hang out." which escalated to "Will you go out with me, Maria?"
And how could I turn down that? Soon our families found out and made it their quest to keep us together. They ship us hard. The one problem; keeping me out of the limelight. My family, myself included, wanted me to carry out an average teenage life.
Well being a social looser as a senior is a good start, right?
So the dates passed and passed until the day came where Caleb explained his life long goal. IF ONLY I hadn't listened...
"You know, turning eighteen has its obligations." he said with a sigh.
We were laying down in the freshly cut grass of the garden, behind the palace, watching clouds.
"Random," I began. "But yeah, being a legal adult and all..."
"No, that's not what I mean." He said. He sounded worried. I sat up and looked down at him. His blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and his perfectly brushed brown hair was shimmering. His dimples were not present. I could tell he was hiding something.
"What DO you mean?" I asked, stroking some grass off his nose.
Caleb smiled and wrapped his muscular arm around me. "I have to get married."
I stopped. "WHAT?!"
Caleb's blue eyes stopped sparkling. "It's my destiny." He said. "If I don't do it at eighteen, I will never become king, and since I'm an only child, the government will crash!"
It was silent for a couple seconds until I spoke. "So...you're going to have to dump me?"
Caleb shook his head. "No, not at all, actually, I kinda wanted to ask you a HUGE favor."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw King John and Queen Amelia watching through the window...creepy.
I stood up and watched as Caleb fumbled with something in his pocket. A second later, he pulled out a small box, and bent down.
"Maria, to fulfill the natural order of the law in this country, will you-"
He opened up the box to display a dimiond ring...probably costing billions of dollars.
"Marry me?"
HOLY CRAP.
