Chapter 4
I was sitting at lunch with my friends Daisy, Ruth, and Scarlet when stupid Rosie made an announcement in the cafeteria for prom.
"All right, everyone!" She declared through the microphone in front of all the seniors. "As your Prom dance representative, I imply that our theme be Royal, in honor of our Prince and soon to be queen!"
Holy crap, did she find out I was Caleb's fiancé? I thought about that for a second and realized no...she would've FLIPPED if she knew.
I guess I'm not going to prom, then.
As if my friends could read my mind, they instantly grabbed my right hand and almost let out a gasp.
"Shh!" I blurted. All three of them gave me wide-eyed looks.
"He did not!" Daisy, the more outgoing one, proclaimed.
I blushed and nodded. "He did, yesterday in fact, as we were just hanging out in the garden."
Ruth "eeked" then said "why didn't you tell us first thing?"
I rolled my eyes. "Because I knew you would all FREAK like you are now."
"C'mon, Maria," said Scarlet. "What else can we do?"
"NOT freak out." I grunted. I still felt apprehensive about getting married.
"Can we please be your bridesmaids?" Asked Daisy. "I mean, I know you'll want your sister to be one, but we know she's more into the gothic thing..."
"Daisy! Shut. Up." Ruth said. Daisy cast her a mean stare.
"What's wrong?" Asked Scarlet.
I put my head in my hands and started to cry.
"Oh no!" Daisy exclaimed. "What happened?!"
"Give her space, guys." Said Ruth.
"It's too much." I muffled.
"What?" Asked Daisy.
"I don't want to get married."
All three of them gasped again.
"Why not?" Asked Ruth.
"I can't deal with all the attention! I'm going to be living in a palace and be treated like royalty. I'll never be a normal person again!"
Scarlet handed me a tissue. I took it and patted my cheeks. By that time, the school counselor walked over.
"Hun?" She asked, and I turned to look at her. "Come into my office immediately."
I sniffed my nose, got up, and followed her.

"What's on your mind, dear?" She asked, sitting down behind her desk.
Her room was filled with posters of encouragement. It was stupid.
"I...I just need to talk to my mom." I said.
The counselor sighed, but let me call. I pulled out my phone and searched though my contacts until I found my mother's.
I pressed call and slumped into a chair. It was quite strange to feel the gaze of the counselor while I was listening to the ringing on the phone.
Finally, mom picked up.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Asked mom.
"I want to come home." I said.
"Why?" She asked. "Is everything okay?"
"No!" I sniffed. "I can't handle it! You know what Rosie said today at school?! We're having a royal themed prom in honor of Caleb and I."
"She found out?" Asked mom.
"No...but I don't like it."
"Honey, you're going to have to get used to this. It'll be all over soon, when Caleb announces his fiancé. By then, you won't be seeing those kids anymore."
"WHAT?!" I asked.
"Sweetie, it's bound to happen soon."
I knew that, but I was so hesitant on the whole thing.
There's no way in stopping the inevitable though.
