Chapter 5

It was another Tuesday at school, when I was dying of boredom in AP Lit.

"What's wrong, Maria?" Whispered Ruth from across the isle.

"Shh!" Our teacher exclaimed.

I shrugged.

"Is this about Caleb?" She whispered.

I sighed.

"Shh!" Our teacher cried again.

Ruth ripped a piece of paper from her notebook and began scribbling on it. She folded it a moment later, and quickly passed it to me.

It read: Is he going to announce it soon?

I wrote back: Soon, he said.

Ruth wrote: are you excited?

I responded with: No! Caleb is really excited though.

Ruth said: I would imagine why. He's been just the prince of Galex for eighteen years now. Once he has a fiancé, people will begin to take him more seriously.

I grabbed the paper and read it. I pulled out my pencil, when my teacher came over and snatched the paper from my table.

"Mr. Wenson!" I cried.

"You need to be doing your work." He growled.

"Just please don't read it! Please!"

"Well, as it seems to be a definite weakness of you, I will then."

No!!!

"Mr. Wenson, please; I'm begging you! It's private!"

"Well, considering the fact that your telling your classmates, it's obviously not private!"

"Oh no!" Ruth whispered.

Mr. Wenson unfolded the paper and began reading.

"Is he going to announce it soon?

Soon.

Are you excited?

No! Caleb is really excited though.

I would imagine why. He's been just the prince of Galex for eighteen years now. Once he has a fiancé, people will begin to take him more seriously."

The entire class cracked up. I folded my arms over my head and sighed.

"Maria! Why are you so into Prince Caleb's life?" Asked Mr. Wenson.

I threw my arms up in the air.

"She even has a fake ring!" Said Rosie. She quickly came over and yanked off my ring.

"Rosie!" I yelled grabbing back my ring.

"Geez, why are you so obsessed with the Prince?" Asked Rosie. "Just leave him alone."

I rolled my eyes. I so wish I could just tell her that I was his fiancé.

---------------------

"So...how's school been?" Asked Caleb. He grabbed my hand and lead me to the porch swing.

We were at his house, that was actually not a palace, and were having dinner together.

"REALLY annoying." I said. "All everyone is talking about is you."

"Are you jealous?" Asked Caleb.

"No." I groaned. "But apparently it's been everyone's mission to find out who your fiancé is."

"And she's right in front of their eyes." Said Caleb, giving me a peck on the cheek.

I smiled and relaxed. It was dark out, and nice and cool. It was the perfect weather to be out in. The only light was coming from the porch light.

King John suddenly came out onto the porch and said "You two, inside, now."

We got up; a bit confused, and went inside.

"The paparazzi found us." Said King

John, locking the back door. Caleb's cousin came in, in his pajamas.

"They're coming for you!" He said, running up the stairs.

Caleb rolled his eyes.

Suddenly, I heard cries from outside.

"Caleb! We know you're in there with your fiancé!" Said a camera man.

King John rushed over and began shutting the blinds. The bodyguards stood over by the door.

I saw flashes. I was terrified.

Caleb suddenly picked me up, and ran upstairs. Queen Amelia was dimming the lights.

All I could hear was yelling from the other side of the door. One of the bodyguards began to call the police. There was no way he was going to pie the house door to fend off the paparazzi.

Caleb took me into his room and shut the door. It was pitch black, and cold. He set me down on his bed, and turned on the lights.

"What's going on?" I asked, as I felt a vibration in my back pocket. I pulled out my phone.

"I don't know." He said, scratching his head. He sat down next to me. "I'm really sorry."

"It's ok." I said. "It's not your fault you're a prince."

"I'm sorry you have to go through this." He explained. "I know it's not fair to your privacy."

"Yeah, it's really bothering me." I blurted.

"But you're a lucky girl." Came the voice of Queen Amelia.

I looked up and saw her walking over to us.

"Caleb dear, can I have a minute with her?"

"Sure, mom." He said, and he got up, walked out, and shut the door.

"Sweetheart, I know this is doing you such a burden, but I hope you understand that you sacrificing your life will help make a better country."

I gulped. This was making me feel uneasy.

"You are greatly honored in this family. We are so glad you two met. It's going to be a heck of a lot easier for you two to tie the knot than past generations. I see a great future in you two that I don't see very often, unconditional love."

"Really?" I asked.

"Yes." She said. "Caleb always told me how amazing you were. I could tell by how his eyes lit up when he talked about you that he was really in love."

I blushed. "It's crazy, we're just a couple of teenagers, we still have a long life ahead of us..."

"I understand." Said Queen Amelia. She placed her hand on my knee. "I was once a rambunctious teenage girl like you,"

Well, take away the rambunctious.

"And I met Caleb's dad at church, when I moved here when I was SEVEN! We really didn't hit it off until Junior year. He proposed, and I was delighted, but scared."

Yup. She knows the feels.

"I really wanted to become a nurse, and go to college, but knowing how important I was to John and the future of the country made me change my mind."

"Oh." I added.

"Maria, it's okay to be scared. You're such an amazing person. I can tell you are going to do great things for us."

I nodded, not sure how to respond.

"You Caleb have a special connection. You were made for each other. John and I...well...we were a good couple for a while, but you two have something special."

"Geez, mom." Caleb said, walking over to us. "You're deep."
