Carmilla
That hair. That woman's beautiful, silky, and shiny hair. Carmilla bit her lip while shaking the beverage in her cup. She's walking this way, act chill. She thought.
"Hi, I'm Laura," The woman introduced herself, "Laura Hollis."
"The name's Carmilla." She replied with the most seducing smile she could muster. More men and women asked for drinks. Gotta keep up, gotta keep up, She told herself as she prepared more alcoholic beverages. Not forgetting about the woman, she spoke again.
"Is there anything I can help you wi-"
"I saw you eye-fucking me."
Carmilla froze. Wait, what? She turned her head towards the girl. Okay, Carm. Don't lose your cool yet. The 20 rules of being a bartender. You memorized this. Come on.
"I, oh god, no, that wasn't what I was trying to, I'm sorry," Laura stuttered in embarrassment.
Rule #1: Do everything you can to make your guests happy within the boundaries that you have been given.
"I'm not trying to-"
"-Well, aren't you the observant one?" Carmilla brushed it aside as a joke. Make her feel comfortable in this bar. She tried but Laura still looked nervous. "Sweetheart, are you enjoying the drink?"
Good. Small talk is good.
"Actually, yes, I am! Thanks for asking. What is it, exactly?"
Rule #5: Know what you serve and why. If you work at a beer bar, make sure you know about beer. If you're new and uneducated, pick a few that you can get to know well, and start from there.
"Oh! It's actually, um, 'Sex on the Beach...'" Carmilla informed.
"Oh," Laura said. The situation wasn't doing any better at all.
"Yeah, your beanpole friend ordered you a good one," Carmilla accidentally let the words slip from her mouth. She was expecting to be scolded at by the customer, but instead, she received a hidden giggle that only Carmilla's ears could pick up. She looked up at Laura, who was now sitting with a smile.
Nice one.
"She's a huge party girl. Totally out of her mind when she gets drunk so obviously I'm gonna be the one to pay the Uber when the clock strikes 12."
"Ha, Disney reference. Nice one, cutie." Carmilla acknowledged.
"Why, thank you! God, I thought I'd have to go through humiliation if you..didn't..." Laura trailed off but now followed was a look in her eyes of realization. "Oh, my God, that's not what I'm trying to s-"
"No, no! It's fine!" Carmilla interjected. "It just makes me even more lucky that I'm the one who's serving you tonight, you know?"
"Yeah, right." Laura said gratefully.
Carmilla shuffled around, self-conscious of her movements, while she shook containers, put ice in drinks, made sure she put just the right amount of certain liquids for other customers. Yeah, being a bartender is not easy.
Her eyes would occasionally glance back at Laura. Sometimes their eyes would meet but they would only look away with embarrassment. Sometimes Carmilla would be able to watch Laura without the woman noticing. She would take notes in her mind of Laura's body language, the way her body would shift every few minutes or so. Sometimes, she would just ogle at the woman's body.
Rule #4: Sleeping with your customers is a great way to lose money.
Carmilla sighed. Not easy at all.
She looked around her own little stage. Everyone was enjoying themselves. The music was deafening to the ears, but the atmosphere was being felt in the heart. Goddamn that sounded cheesy as hell.
Another chance of being free for a good two minutes. The rest of the customers at the bar was happily drinking. Carmilla turned back to speak to Laura again but was surprised to find her not in her seat. Should she even be surprised? Again, she sighed. Before she turned back to mix more drinks, her eyes caught the glimmer of an object in the same spot as where Laura sat. It appeared to be some sort of shiny bracelet. A silver one, to be exact. The silver bracelet was the kind where it seemed like two strands of metal was woven to look like a braid. Carmilla shook her head. She wouldn't normally do this stupid chasing-after-the-girl thing, but why not? It's not like she's gonna sleep with her.
She turned her head towards the other bartender, William, who was working away his part of the bar.
"Willy!" She called. He didn't turn his head. Stupid loud ass music.
"Willy-Wonka!" She tried again. This time she got a reaction from him.
"Oh, my God, Carm, can you not call me that during work? That shit's embarrassing." William said with annoyance. "The frilly hell do you want?"
"Cover for me! Give me just five minutes, I'll be quick!" Carmilla explained.
"What!? No! Dude, it's packed, don't leave me alone here, it's like a freakin' tsunami here right now and–"
"Thanks, Will!" Carmilla said, already about to leave.
"The fu–Hey, are you even listening to me!?" William yelled over the music, but there was no use.
She was already gone.
"Fucking bitch." He whispered with a shake of his head. He looked around the bar. Around a third of the people were looking at him expectantly, waiting for him to get their order of drinks.
