I woke up with a jump and looked around. What in the... Oh, right. I was at Cameron's place. But where was Cam? I stood up, my back aching.
"Cameron?" I whispered. I started to tip toe towards the door when I tripped over something that made a sound I'd never heard a healthy animal make. I sat up and was relieved to see Budd, Cameron's year old bloodhound. He grunted then climbed onto my chest and licked my face.
Laughing, I gave his ears a nice scratch and he groaned happily. I picked him up then made our way downstairs. Cameron was right where I thought he was: the couch. He always let me have his bed when I slept over. We tiptoed over to him then I held Budd right over his face. The pup started licking his cheek, but he wouldn't wake up.
"Iris?" he said, stirring as he wiped his face. "Ugh, Budd, you have the worst morning breath I have ever had the pleasure of smelling. Morning, you."
"Morning. We thought we'd give you a little kiss and you might be up to taking us out for breakfast?" I replied, both Budd and I giving him our Grade A pouts. Laughing as he sat up, the blanket fell to his lap, which made Budd wriggle in my arms until I dropped him so he could tear away the covers as if he were playing Tug-O-War.
"Oh, no you don't!" he said, getting on his hands and knees to grab the blanket before Budd could take it away to bury it for forever. I laughed as Budd toppled over the blanket and rolled to my feet. He gave me these big, innocent eyes that I had to reward. I picked him up and kissed his forehead, grinning sheepishly at Cameron. "How does he do that? I mean, come on," he whined.
I patted his head then went into the bathroom to change into something else. "He's an evil genius, Cameron. Now are we getting breakfast or not? I wanna tell you all about camp, and you know a fatty like me can't possibly fangirl over her vacation without Denny's in her tum-tum!"
"Sure, sure. I'm gonna go... Put some pants on," he said with a chuckle as he picked up Budd from the bathroom doorway. "We're gonna go get dressed. Be in the garage in two."
"Gotchya!" I called. I had to wiggle myself into my jeans (always a struggle) and then I pulled on my favorite band tee, internally grateful that I hadn't worn it at camp and it was clean in my little suitcase. I looked at myself in the mirror and sighed as I realized I had to go find my glasses in Cameron's room. I shuffled upstairs and knocked three times before he asked to come in. I opened the door and picked up my glasses then slid them on. I looked at him as he bounced onto the end of the bed, picking up his football off the ground and tossing it in the air then catching it again.
"Cameron, why am I so useless?" I said out of the blue as I stared at myself in his bathroom mirror for a long while. I wasn't really expecting an answer because I didn't think he even heard me. But he turned around and gave me a look that I just couldn't read.
"Iris, why do you do that to me? You ask me things that we both know the answer to, but neither of our answers will make you happy. My turn to ask a question: what do you really want? Tell me what you want, Iris." It made my body shiver with goose bumps at his seriousness. I hated when he got like this. I couldn't even look at him. I just shrugged stupidly and muttered something he couldn't hear.
"I don't know..."
"Exactly. So let's get you fed and ready to tell me all about your stories at band camp," he said with a grin.
"Drama camp, Cam, drama camp!" I cried, throwing my arms up.
"I know, I know, I know!" he said, laughing. He stood up and held out his hand. I took it then he squatted down so I could hop on his back. I walked past him to the door.
"Let's just go," I said quietly. I didn't want any more piggyback rides. I frowned and followed me out to the garage. We slid into the Camino together and he drove us into town. I turned on my phone to see 3 missed calls from my mom. Oh, shit. This was going to be bad.
