There is a bedtime story told to the children in my pack, about the first mates and how they came to be. This story is saved for the Full Moon Gathering, every pack has one, some spend them partying, some hunting, but our pack gathers around a huge fire while the pack elder, my grandmother, tells the story of the mates.
One night when I was six years old I was restless, questioning why the Luna didn't just save herself. She was plenty strong enough, why wait for Alpha to save her? I raised my hand and asked GrandLuna but she just smiled and said "Alpha might have saved Luna from her bindings, but Luna saved his wolf from becoming twisted with loneliness without his mate." I rolled my eyes and snuck away from the fire, not at all satisfied with GrandLuna's answer. I walked through the woods to the next fire over where the men sat around a fire of their own, telling stories of battles. I quickly spotted my Daddy, the Alpha of Pack Greenwood and crawled up into his lap.
"Look who came to join us, lads, it's me wee princess Alaisa." My daddy smiled and hugged me close.
"Daddy I don't want to be a princess anymore. Princesses like the first Luna didn't even save herself. I can save myself. I'm a warrior. An Alpha." I grunted and pushed him away. The men were quite, but I could hear the smiles on their faces; wondering how my father would work this one out.
"Och, lads, do ye here this? Alaisa is no' a princess no more. But even warriors like yer daddy and all these strong lads need their rest, why don't I take Ye off to bed?"
"No! I want to here the stories, Daddy. Please?" I hugged his around his thick neck and his red beard tickled my cheeks.
"Oui, c'mon, Angus let the bairn stay and here the stories. We'll cut out the gory bits." My father's best friend and Beta, Ian, urged him. The rest of the men joined in and I smiled from ear to ear.
"Alright. Alright. But ye know, wee Alaisia, girl Alphas are Lunas, and they are just as important as the men. They stay at home and take care of bairns and feel all of us big men. Without yer mother, I wouldnna be here. Now close yer eyes, little one." Even as he spoke I yawned.
"I don't want to feed men and babies, I want to fight. I'm going to be an Alpha. Not a Luna...Alpa...Alaisia.." And with that I drifted off into sleep. From that moment forward I dedicated my life to being the toughest wolf around, so one day I would become Alpha of my Pack Greenwood.
*****
My wolf woke me at 3:29 A.M., clawing at my insides ready to get up, eat, and be set free to run through the mountains.
"No..stop. It's not time to get up yet.." I groaned. Rolling on my stomach and burring my head under my pillow; like that would do any good. She clawed and paced restlessly inside me. What is one more minute?
"It's everything." And right on cue my alarm woke up and I quickly slammed the snooze button. "You're so rude." I growled at her. I sat up in bed and stretched my arms above my head, my bones cracking and creaking. Slowly I got out of bed and walked over to the sounding glass doors in my bedroom that lead to my balcony looking into the woods and out to the mountains. "Alright..lets go." I spoke to her and pealed off my clothes, but before I would even get my fuzzy socks off she took over and ripped right through them.
"Damnit those were my favorite!" I yelled in my mind. She just whipped her head back and howled, laughing at me, and took off in a sprint.
