CHAPTER FIVE
"Jane!"
"Annie?" I frowned, confused, "W-why are you using Eric's phone to call me?"
"You have no idea" She giggled in excitement.
I nodded, rolled my eyes. "I do"
"I am too excited" She took a breath, "Eric is with me"
My heart sank, hearing this from her. It's early morning and Eric is with her. Has their intimacy escalated to the next stage?
Her voice sounded, "Jane?"
"Yeah" I tried to sound calm.
Annie's rich low chuckle could be heard, "I think he will propose to me soon."
My face turned pale, raising a hand to cover my beating heart as I took in her words. Eyes shut tightly, head heavy. I scowled, leaning against the bed headboard for support.
"Jane, I will call you again." Annie paused, "He's coming out of the shower soon."
"Ann, wait-"
The call had ended. My eyes dazed in the emptiness of the surrounding. Nausea swirled unrestrained in my empty stomach. My blood had become tar as my heart struggled to keep beating. I inhaled deeply. I need to get up. Clenched fist as I gather courage, my body shifted off from the bed.
I spent the next few hours in the event dazing into space. All I could think about was Annie's word - I think he will propose to me soon. It sounded like a dreaded bell in my ear. The plan was all good but instead of feeling happy, I was sitting here, drowned in disappointment. Did I started to have affections for Eric? I felt like a lost sheep wandering in the wilds. My directions were distorted.
"Are you okay?" Henry nudged me.
"Yeah?" I jerked, staring blankly at Henry. He took a closer look at me, frowned in worries.
"Am good" I gave a quick smile, reassuring him.
"You sure about that?" He asked, "You don't look too good"
I shook my head. With the smile barely hanging on my face, I gestured Henry at the passer-by that was examining our booth. Henry trailed over where my finger was pointing at. He took a leap and headed to the guy. In folded arms, I let out a slight sigh. I need some distractions. My eyes scanned the surroundings and spotted the stack of flyers lying at the corner. I stretched over and grabbed them.
Walking with a bulk of flyers, I watched the crowd to locate for a potential client. Then I noticed a lady looking lost. She was grabbing a few flyers, reading them with uncertainty.
I approached her with a smile, "Afternoon."
She paused.
"My company is ICupid" I gave her a piece of our flyer, "And we are here creating awareness."
She looked at me for one second and glanced over at the flyer that I just handed her.
"One of the good things signing up with us is we only collect fees after you had found a partner through us" I smiled.
Her eyes widened, "That's like no commitment in signing up"
I nodded, "Yes, you're right"
The rest of the afternoon went well. I used a less aggressive approach by just having casual conversations with everyone that walked past our booth. It seemed to work well as we already hit our target just slightly after dinner time.
