SONG The Beach, The NeighborhoodWe were walking our way back to my house because the sun was starting to set. I now know what happens in the dark. I would never put anyone I love in dangerous situations as long as I could control it, especially when they don't know of the dangers. I couldn't let go of the thought that Wesley may be the cause for the sudden destruction in our lives. Mishu is still missing, our friend is dead, there's a bipolar vampire on the streets and a mystery woman vampire with no humanity. There's also still the question of what the hell is wrong with me.
As we walked, Verity looked over and smiled. If only she could hear what was going on in my thoughts.
About ten minutes away.
The street lights were blinking now and the sun was almost retired.
I stopped walking due to an uncomfortable sensation in my body. I felt my throat burn and I was quickly wrenching on the sidewalk. And instead of mushed s'mores, red fluid found its way out of my mouth. I knew what it was, but the freaked-out-Verity had no idea.
I was puking out Alec's vampire blood.
"What the hell? Adair are you okay?" She yelled, rushing to hold back my hair.
As the last bit came out and my stomach queased tightly, I responded, "Yeah just don't question it. And don't tell anyone."
"Don't question it? You're kidding, and who would I tell?"
"Yeah just... it's no big deal okay? Don't say anything to my sisters or our friends and stuff."
"Okay you don't want me to say anything, I respect you, but you don't realize how worried I am now."
It made my heart sink to see how much she cared about me; there was so much I couldn't tell her, even though I trusted her.
"You don't need to be worried. It's not like I drank human blood or something. It's probably just juice that my body rejected," I horribly lied. I knew that sounded extremely stupid. I don't even drink juice.
"Don't expect me to believe that, Adair."
"I didn't."
The rest of the walk sucked in silence.
When we arrived at my doorstep Verity spoke, "I'm wondering if Mishu will ever come back."
Oh, Mishu.
I will find him. I'll get help. He's been gone too long. I don't know what they've done to him.
"He will come back. He has to."
"Does he really?" She asked, rhetorically, wrapping her arms around me for a hug.
My arms clung onto her, savoring the precious moment of friendship.
"Thank you for today," she continued, letting go. "I'm glad you left the house for me," she laughed.
"No, thank you for dragging me out," I replied.
"Is that sarcasm I hear?" She gasped.
"Not at all!" I unlocked the door, entering the house.
But I immediately stopped at the threshold, throwing my arm across to keep Verity from coming any further.
Those eyes.
I could never forget those eyes.
The woman with the glowing crimson eyes was standing right inside, with Keziah at her feet-- Keziah, who's coincidently home early from classes.
The woman was all-around glowing. Unlike the night of Sage's murder, I clearly see she's a platinum blonde and fair-skinned killer, on top of the eyes of radiating red. Her presence froze my being, I couldn't register the situation. My feet were planted in the doorway and I could only feel the color diminishing from my face.
"Oh my God! Who the hell are you?" Verity shrieked, moving in front of my seemingly lifeless body.
The Crimson was quick to study Verity, and I witnessed the compulsion on my friend before my eyes. Keziah was still lying on the wooden floor. She wasn't wearing her bracelet that I'd given to her the night of the Christmas ball.
"Hello, beautiful human. You don't see what you think you see. Everything is okay, your friend and her sister are okay. You two have hung out for about two hours, but you decided you have to leave. You're getting tired and feel like going home. You had so much fun, you don't remember anything," she whispered in seemingly ancient tongue.
Her voice was so smooth it pulled me further into an unknown darkness.
"Now go on your way sweetie."
And with that order, Verity left, looking puppet-like.
"And as for you," she hissed. "What do they see in you?"
But Verity was wearing her bracelet.
