SONG Me, The 1975
I woke up and he was gone. Definitely for the best because it would've been an awkward "good morning". I had to see Mishu today. I needed to know if he was okay. If I knew anything about werewolves, it was that they're only furry on a full moon.
"Addie!" Jax called, prolonging the nickname, while pounding at my door.
I opened it. "Jax, you know I hate that nickname. Anyway what do you want? I'm about to leave."
"Kezzy said you had to watch me while she went grocery shopping. I'm bored, take me to the park!"
"Oh no. I have to go somewhere."
"I going to tell Keziah you're not watching me!"
"I haven't even left yet! Kids and their smartphones nowadays," I mumbled. "Fine, you want to come with me?"
"Whatever."
"Alright."
"You have a scratch on your face."
"Thank you, I didn't know."
We got to Mishu's house, and since I know Marina loves kids, I left Jax with her while I went to his room.
"Mishu?" There was a long pause.
"What?" he groaned under his covers.
"Are you okay?" I asked softly.
He sat up. "Define okay."
"I know you must be really confused, and even scared, but I guess you're a werewolf now. This is reality. I don't know how, but you are." I sat next to him on the bed. "In sorry this happened to you, but you're not alone."
"Then why do I feel so alone? Yeah, I am confused and scared. I could've killed you last night Adair! Do you see your face?"
"That wasn't you."
"Yes it was! For some reason I just happened to turn into an animal on my 16th birthday. I'm cursed. Tell me how any of this is realistic."
"I only found out about this whole new world two days ago. I'm still not even close to adjusted. Werewolves, vampires, and even witches exist."
"Don't even tell me that. I can't deal with any of this. Please stay away from me."
I got up to leave. "It wasn't your fault, what happened. If you need someone you know how where I am."
Jax was in their living room watching TV.
"That was quick! I hope to see you again soon Adair," Marina said with a smile.
"Me too, I'll be seeing you. Thank you for watching over Jax!" I said smiling back and left.
We walked around town square for 15 minutes waiting for Keziah to get home so I could drop Jax off. I saw Leni window shopping. I hoped I could just avoid eye contact and leave but she obviously wasn't going to let me go that easily.
"Oh-em-gee Adair! Fancy seeing you here. I'm so hoping to see you at after school tryouts tomorrow! You could totally make the team. This is the first time the cheer leading squad is allowing freshmen in, so it's kind of a big deal." I could see she was trying to be friendly, but sucked at it. She had something up her sleeve.
"Actually, I think I'm going to. Can't wait." I was happy to play along.
I know she likes Wesley, or at least wants to get in his pants, and thinks that by embarrassing me somehow he'll like her. How childish can people be?
"Great. And who is this little cutie? Your sister?" She asked while lowering herself to Jax's height and facing her.
"Yes, Jax. She's ten. Anyway we have to get going."
"Oh gee! You're right, me too. See you tomorrow," she said getting into her blue punch-buggy then driving away.
"So preppy," I mumbled to myself.
I took Jax home and went to hang out in the woods with Sage, Verity, and Conall. I asked them during the day instead of night for reasons unknown to them. I arrived and they were in our mini circle-shaped clearing of the woods which we found in middle school. It must've taken someone a lot of work to cut down all of those trees that were in this space. I'm a real green freak, so I try not to think of that every time I come here. But as long as it wasn't me and I didn't know who did it I'll be okay.
They were starting a picnic on a large sheet.
"We're having a picnic?" I asked.
"Why not? It's such a beautiful day," Sage answered.
The birds were chirping and the trees whistling, and everything seemed perfect, but there was still an uneasy feeling in the area that I couldn't explain. It's always felt this way though, so I choose to ignore it.
"You're right. I haven't had a picnic in a while, since..." my voice strayed from the topic.
"I've got your favorite, plain turkey sandwich!" Verity told me.
It's true, I like the plain stuff. I can eat a loaf of Cuban bread at one time with nothing in it. Yikes. But, I can also be really picky.
"Thanks, you sure know me!" I smiled.
"So what's Mishu been up to since the party?" Conall asked. "He didn't want to come."
"Ah you know.. he just probably wants to relax today," I lied. I totally knew what was going on. "What do you guys think about the cheer leading squad? I decided I'm going to the tryouts."
"I was thinking about it! If you are, then I totally am too," Sage said thrilled.
"Ooh, mini skirts and preppy cheer leading? I never took you for one of those. I'm all for watching though," Conall remarked.
"Conall, you can be really creepy sometimes," I reminded him.
