We were close: I could see the huge concrete walls towering into the sky just about scraping it. It was a little past noon; we had gotten there with no trouble at all.
On our way we passed a large group of about one hundred to two hundred of the infected, they began to follow but we lost sight of them after about a mile.

We stopped outside. The walls opened - five people came out rushing towards us, all three of us stood there frozen. I held Noah in my arms as he held tightly on to me
"check for bite marks." a six foot, muscular man with a copious amount of facial hair exclaimed as they stalked towards us.

"Names -" he paused staring at mom "sergeant Caroline Adams?" How did this guy know mom's name and what the hell did he mean by 'sergeant'? Mom was not in the army she doesn't even know how to turn a cooker on let alone use a gun.
"Sergeant major hadly." She addressed him
"Nice to make your aquaintance." He laughed a deep laugh
"stop with that formal bullshit come here".

His smile was broad as he tugged mom in to a bear like hug
"Long time no see." he bellowed
"Are these the young children you left us for?" he questioned she smiled and nodded
"Lyra and Noah" she exclaimed
"your mom over here, the best solider in her squadron, she was skilled, as I'm sure she still is." I looked at mom, did I even know her, why would she keep things like this a secret? It was amazing how the woman I knew as my mother quickly formed into one who I knew so little about.

I was surprised more than anything else I tried to picture her the way she used to be; it didn't work I was way too blinded by the women she was now.

"I'm sure she was" I say raising an eyebrow at mom.
"We're safe we didn't come into physical contact with the infected." His face radiated relief
"The infected?" he questioned
"Yeah the creatures." Mom exclaimed "Oh they're not infected no that's how it begins, they're biters: they feed off human flesh crave it like humans crave normal foods but multiplied by one thousand. Tonight in the meeting room we will go over our plans, every base in the country are getting things set in place."

We began to walk into the open walls within the walls, it was like a mini town with one huge building in the middle that not only scratched the sky but impaled it.

There were gardens that had food growing within them: huts, cars, oil, weapons, people loads of people. Some small thought whispered in the back of my mind maybe he's here; maybe he escaped with his family, just maybe. But I knew that, that voice was one of hope and in my life hope had never gotten me anywhere no matter how many times she held my hand. Teagan was gone; it is what it is.

As we walked through, people stopped what they were doing to look up at us, Noahs head now buried in the crook of my neck, my hand stroking his curly brown hair for comfort. Their eyes followed us until we entered the sky impaling building. It was busy: people in uniform rushing to places. "This is where the soldiers and their families stay, this place runs underground and has one hundred and fifty three floors this is where you will be staying you're on floor 147 room 10167." He smiled. I thought to tell him about the huge group of biters coming this way but most likely found a different route so I left it.

This place was massive and unreal. The walls were grey like the floor. The building took on a pentagon shape and at the very top floor it was all glass bulletproof glass. You could see for miles the sun was begging to set over the white dunes, the sky was so different from this morning. This morning - the guy in black now it makes sense mom had been in situations in which she's had to leave people behind so it was easy for her to just switch off her emotions, same with Teagan.

The room we were situated in had the same gray walls and glass doors, to get in you have to have an ID and there were curtains you could pull across for privacy, there was a bunk bed: the bottom bunk was a double bed and the top was a single - the sheets were plain grey like everything else, there was a window looking out on to the dunes the window was slightly ajar so I pushed it to open it further and stuck my head out to get a clearer view. In the distance there was a huge mountain like rock, the sun hiding behind it the last few rays disappearing. The moon sprung high in the sky.
