The garage door slowly made its way open, mom stepped on the gas giving us a head start. Immeadiatly catching the attention of the...to be honest I had no idea what to call them. The infected? Yeah.

The gravity of the situation had just sunk in to my cold skin as I took in the sight of the mayhem that occurred while we cowered back into our home like we were told to. Those who where either dead or infected decide they were going to think irrationally and panic instead of remaining calm putting both their families and themselves in danger.

My dad, as he's a solider, taught us to think rationally and remain calm in situations such as these. Well that is in the unlikely events, he often let me handle his gun and he taught me how to shoot that was when I had just turned ten. Only shooting cans but there was this one time my aim was way off and I shot a bird out of a tree, I rushed over to it. The poor thing had died instantly. I cried for two days straight.

Looking out of the well tinted windows the mass destruction was clear and it was evident that there was no going back from this. This was the type of thing you'd see in the movies. It was pitch black, the moon full; often highlighting the blood stained sidewalks; refracting to create beams of sinister red light.

The town fell silent unlike earlier today: the Eagles had won the football championship and were partying. Girls. Vain girls hanging out of the jocks' convertables, wearing flimsy bikinis that were one too many sizes small - their womanhood spilling out of them; those were the popular girls wonder where they are now; now this has happened. Their 'status' has died with them.

Driving down a familiar road thoughts of my best friend Teagan came to mind. We were in close proximity of his home. I could see his house, the cars still parked in the drive way.
"Mom stop!" I exclaimed. Reaching for the door handle; I pull on it profusely "Mom unlock the door now! " I demanded tears spilling over when a heard of the infected made there way to his house.

There was screaming,
"Rob stop, Rob!!!" The voice was familiar, Teagan's mom? They were following the noise. Scratching at the doors and windows they piled like ragdolls over one another, pressure building on the door causing the white painted entrance to fall open.

"Lyra we can't" she said sounding distraught and helpless.
"Mom come on this is Teagan we're talking about."
"Ly I know but they're gone we can't risk our lives, they're gone now and I am not putting you and your brother in danger we have to make our own way..." I scowled at her anger erupting from inside of me
"Mom what he's like a son to you, you said it yourself!" I was frantically screaming
"Lyra shut up!!" My mom's voice topping my volume
"No mom I won't I am not going to shut up I refuse to let them die I refuse if it was us they wouldn'-".
"Lyra I told you" she whispered. We had now attracted most of the herd from Teagan's house, that's when I noticed their house had been muted from all screams.

Ramming through them they hit the windscreen like bugs. Leaving cold blood and a huge crack in the screen. Mom didn't stop she went straight past Teagan's house and a look that I had never seen on her face replaced the one before: a look of fear coloring half of her face blue and determination colouring the other half yellow mixing together to produce green.

"Mom! Slow down." we were far into the highway now
"Mom!!" And with that she lifted her foot off the gas.
"What?!! Lyra what!"
"Where are we going ?"
"Only one place I can think of: White Sands Military Base, they set up shelter last year, we'll be safe there." The high way was disturbingly empty
"Then why aren't there any cars mom?".
"This particular highway has been closed for months now due to roadwork repair, this is the shortest route there, plus I can guarantee highway 86 is full of those things many people would have gone that way to escape" she breathed out all at once that's when I remembered Noah sitting beside me eyes widened tears threating to spill
"Shush it's okay, sorry, try and sleep everything will be better if u get some rest, okay?" I said pulling him on to my lap rocking him back and forth he nodded and soon his eyes drifted closed.
